Default How to set timing on a 350 chev small block in ski boat

Hey guys I was wondering if I could get some help setting the timing on the motor in my ski boat. The dog clutch setup I think has either hidden or removed the harmonic balancer. I have no timing marks to go off. I have rotated the engine until number 1 cylinder exhaust valve closes. Is this roughly tdc? It's hard to get a screwdriver in the spark plug hole due to the exhaust manifolds. Thanks in advance. (I also pointed the rotor towards number one when inserting it back in ) is it true that number 6 cylinder will just start moving when number 1 is tdc? Thanks again

No mate, you want TDC on the compression stroke which is after the intake valve closes, both valves closed, and ignition occurs.

When a timing case driven dog clutch is fitted, the harmonic balancer is removed along with the usual way of being able to set up and adjust the ignition timing.
You need to make your own timing marks on the flywheel if you want to set the timing properly.
Here's a copy and paste of a post I wrote over 4.5 years ago...

You need to make your own timing marks... this is how I would do it...
Remove all the spark plugs and screw a piston stop into #1 plug hole. This stop will prevent the piston from reaching TDC so be gentle!
Make or mark a pointer and position it somewhere over the flywheel/flexplate ring gear where it will be easy see.
Turn the engine over slowly by hand until it stops and mark the ring gear at the pointer.
Rotate the engine again by hand in the opposite direction until it stops and put on another mark at the pointer.
    * exactly HALF WAY between these two points is ‘true’ TDC *
Now measure the circumference of the ring gear in mm and divide it by 360.
Let’s say for example a Holden flywheel might be 1116mm in circumference, then each degree will be 3.1mm.
Paint marks at TDC and 10, 12, 20, 30 & 40 degrees BTDC will probably be all you need. These additional marks will be BEFORE the TDC mark in direction of rotation.

It’s a bit involved to do but it should be very accurate.
    Hope that helps.
