Default Engine removal required to change v8 heads in a torana?

Can someone please help settle a pub argument on whether it is possible to change heads on a 308 in a LX torana with the block still on std mounts in the car. Must include torquing to spec and using head studs ...

I had the engine in had to fit the headers in place, then heads in place before fitting the stud kit?? I'd say once the intakes off and the stud kits removed, the heads should come off??

the last two words are the head ache
    yeah like ....with studs!

I know you cannot do that in an LJ (XU1) with a 308
coz the booster gets in the way

    in an LX...? dunno

^ Yeah definitely not with the studs unless you've made extra clearance around it (blower housing, brake booster). Nothing wrong with good quality bolts though either.

Last weekend we tested the argument out and changed the heads. It is possible but an absolute nightmare. The studs have to be treated like bolts.

Are you blokes masochists? I hope whatever the prize you got for the bet was worth it.
