    Default Holden 253 timing chain.

    Gents,
Did the early HT / HG 253's have a single row timing chain?

Thanks, thought I remembered someone mentioning years back that the early 253 had a single row chain that was prone to stretching.... Any idea what year the double row timing set was introduced in the 253?

Not sure when or if the 253ís ever got a double row timing chain. Iíve pulled a few genuine HDT 308ís apart and the ones from VK and VL cars had double row chain sets.

Regardless, if you are rebuilding a Holden 253 or 308, Iíd fit a new double row timing chain set.

2fiddy threes never got double row chains in the factory

GMH parts manual for VB (red) and VC/VH 253s (blue motor) and WB shows a single row chain for the 253

but as said, get a double row for your build!

ps... I don' think you can actually buy a single chain for a Holden V8 these days anyways

I'm fairly (apart from specials like Grp A's) I'm fairly sure VL 5L were the first Holden V8's to be fitted with double row chains as standard.
The VL engine was a parts bin special, had the double row timing chain, big valve heads as standard.
you can't put a price on FUN

actually no.... it was a change, fitting double row chains with the LV2 304 (destroked 308) carby engines introduced part way thru VK

I have a double row Rollmaster that I don't need, It was only removed from my engine as I was building it with all new parts.

    aarrrh.... no

all Grp A 304 engines have double row chains. It was the near standard early 308 engines used
when the Grp A period started (before the Grp A was homologated) that had the single timing chain
and problems with that (plus std stamped steel rockers which also had high failure rates)

OK, so OZ introduced grp A before we had FIA grp A?
I thought the year Tom and Larry drove they had an engine failure due to that?

What was the specific problem with the single row chains? Was it chain breakage?
