    Default 253 extractors

My neighbour’s daughter’s young bloke has bought himself a WB ute with a 253 and I’ve been helping him out with my “old skills”.

Mostly fairly straightforward, however, he wanted to put a set of pipes on it and I said to get 1 1/2” primary tri-ys that end in 2” outlets and he’s drawn a blank. Seems Pacemaker do Tri-ys with 1 5/8” primaries and 2 1/4” outlets and that’s the closest he can find.

I know de fillipo used to do them but they shut up shop a few years back, I would have sworn Genie made the same thing but apparently they’re not in the catalog. I guess we’ll be sticking with cast headers or maybe a custom order somewhere?

In my view those Pacemakers would suit a 308/355 but are way too much pipe for the 253.

Does anyone have any advice on where to get some good headers for a 253? He wants good quality without breaking the bank.

Thanks folks - exactly what I hoped he’d find.

He showed me what Genie had listed in their site and those headers don’t seem to be part of their standard offerings. I’m guessing they just do a run now and then.

I still have those 1 1/2" Genie headers from 35 years ago. They did a 12.9 in my hotty 308 manual VH.

Having tried a variety of headers when these things were much more common; tri-ys with the 1 1/2” primaries going to 1 3/4” collectors and 2” outlets gave the best driving car for a 253 and on many 308s as well.

I don’t know if there is any scientific evidence for this but we used to put it down to the smaller primaries generating higher exhaust gas speeds and setting up flows across the system that more effectively generated extractor-type effects. Sort of like those flow driven vacuum pumps.

I can remember trying different sets of headers on a 253 a friend had in his tonner just because we had them there. It ran better on the stock manifolds than a set of 1 5/8” primary, tuned length headers but the 1 1/2” primary tri-ys we had bought for the car were clearly best being more responsive throughout the rev range. It wasn’t a strictly fair comparison due to not setting things up perfectly but the 1 1/2” tri-ys felt way ahead. It’s stuck with me.
