    Default Valve Spring Pressure

Assembling my heads at the moment and I have a question about spring pressure, I am running a crane 286 and they state 114 lbs closed and 324 lbs open valve spring pressure I have a set of double springs: installed height is correct (1.700) rocker ratio is as recommended (1.6). My closed pressure is 140 and open is 325. I am going to run the cam in with the inners out, but is 140 closed going to be too much once the inners are back in? Whats the highest closed pressure I would want to run on this cam?

You tried calling or flicking an email to Crane? I'm sure they'd be able to answer this question easily and quickly.

No, was assuming they would refer me straight back to the cam card.

Well, the cam card only states what the "desired" open and closed pressures are so that would be a bit pointless of them to say that. I'm fairly sure that someone at Crane would be able to tell you if your closed pressure will be ok or not. I've talked to Crow on a number of occasions about my cam and they were always willing to answer my questions, couldn't see why crane would be different.

Closed pressure is a little high for a flat cam, I'd set it at 110-120 for a 286.
You can get .050" offset locks to raise the retainer & get more installed height, then shim from there to get your seat pressure.
Most springs will drop around 10lbs of seat pressure within a couple of thousand kays as they settle, so you'll be aiming for around 125lbs on the seat to start with.

Yeah, I just flicked Crow an email double checking my HD single springs will be ok with my Crane 284 and he got back swiftly saying they're around 95lbs closed and should be perfectly fine. Good to know.

Thanks TK - I also found out I can get .100" up retainers so either those or the collets should get me in the ball park with shims. Woodsy - I finally got someone on the phone at Crane and they were along the lines of what TK says - so all good thank you
