hey buddy im just starting a resto job on my 1979 fairlane i was hoping to respray it doing the prep work and priming at home the getting the finish done by a pro im thinking of going with 2pac blackwhats your view?
  4. Drew, The fuel economy thingo, yep, But basicly if you have more power, you using more enery which in turn chews more fuel.
For fuel economy you need tallish gears and a light foot, But if you have a very well tuned 355 and drive it say like your 308, well then the fuel economy should be the same as your 308, but if you drive it like the potential the 355 HAS !! Then it will naturally chew more juice. More power = More juice.
With yr diff being low and you have a manual with a low first gear, than to get max power you will need to build yr engine to rev fairly high, other wise if you had Tall gears you would build it for torque. 355s naturally have a lot of torque cause of cubes, so with yr type of gearing you need mid and high end power!! So in this case it will chew the juice (accelerator close to the floor).
    Whats your thoughts?

    Cheers Stan.

Edit:what do you expect from this engine? like 1/4 miles times ?, if so what time would you like,..or will you mainly use it for off the red lights on the street, 100 to 200 mtres sprints?

Ok well I should have gave u a little bit more info on it.

good strong 308 engine, new big valve heads suit unleaded, mild hydraulic cam,A9L Rods,Extractors, twin 21/4" exhaust system, rebuilt M21 4 Speed gearbox with heavy duty clutch and pressure plate,Ford 9" diff with 3.55 LSD centre

I will upgrade the gearbox to a supra 5 spend and also runs a 600 holley. with a new dual plane manifold. With elec dissy and Rev limiter. New water pump, fuel pump and everything like that is basically brand new. Just keeps going back to the mech and stuff gets replaced. I did ask him for advice but he said I cant get fuel economy with a 355. I do understand that it is more cubes but surely they cant be too bad?
  6. Hey Drew, 6K isnt a lot but if you use it wisely it is enough for a truely fun streeter.
Ill still stand behind the package that I had in mine, which was mild, good on fuel and very torquey, which means you can still run tall gears for economy if you wish.

I bought a come 355 stroker kit that was fully balanced, gave it 9.8 comp, 218 218 @50 cam with .496 lift, stock dual plane manifold and slightly modified quaddy. And HEI (get rid of points). Good tri Y extractors with 2 1/4 inch exhaust (twin), L34 valves wit Lt1 springs.

Little extras that dont cost $$,..block off intake manifold exhaust bypass (reduceHeat under carb), and if using a quaddy build a heat shield for under the carb so as to keep fuel cooler,..and connect yr dizzy vacuum advance to the manifold and not the carby ( big diff in regards to streetability and cold morning running)

These are some basic tips from a novis sing out if I can help anymore.

What diff ratio are you gunna run and gearbox and what carb do you like??

    hey mate,

Well after ready alot of your posts I think you are the guy who I should come to for advice Basically I have a Holden 308 in my HZ ute, its getting a bit tired so I was thinking a rebuild. I drive the ute every day and its my little streeter to blow off Skylines and Jap Imports. I was just wondering if I was going to rebuild the 308 for around 6K what should I put in it and what size stroker should it have?

    Cheers,
    Drew
