I guess it depends if you do it yourself or pay a shop. But, paint stripper, sandpaper, body filler, primer, thinners, prep wash and paint etc will set you back up to a couple grand. Its not cheap all that stuff. But it also depends what quality of job you want to do.

do it yourself mate if your not overly fussed.. or ask a couple of backyarders that can wave a gun.
If you go into a paintshop the money is their time.. no matter how casual you are with the result they can still be working on a job that's more lucrative to them... so they charge.

Was thinking engine enamel? I will sand it and use SME putty here and there get it straight (somewhat anyway) and then use high heat primer(do I need primer since its going on the old paint and not straight on metal?) Then paint it with vht enamel or something and clear coat it with vht engine enamel. $500 at most and no noisy compressor but dosnt enamel need to he baked?

You could get a 6L kit of cheap 2K (white or black) for around $250, the epoxy primer 5L kit is $180 so thats less than $500 plus of course the filler, sandpaper, tape, thinners etc

Of course I am not condoning spraying this without a booth or the proper PPE gear But ya know...

I've just about given up on getting my HQ painted, smash shops in my area aren't interested and the specialist shops that do older cars wont even look at it unless it gets done to their high standards, had estimates for 35k and up, more if they find any rust.

If its just to make it look good for sale just spray it with exterior gloss house paint, dont laugh guys ive seen a Ford many years ago done by a guy with house paint and a roller, and believe it or not came up pretty good, and cheap and easy to apply.

I sprayed it with a respirator, they arent expensive.. It was the chromate free epoxy too.

Normal panel shops are only interested in smash work, you'll have to find a smaller shop that does restos. Even then I got quoted 25K and thats without touching a hammer or rust work just a primer and spray then bodywork was on top of that, which I thought a touch rich.

A local shop here quoted 15K to do my old XC, extra if I wanted the rust done properly welding metal.

You could buy all the materials required (mid-level paint) spray guns etc for a few grand the rest is labour.

11 years ago, i am sure at a shop i worked for we did a very quick: fix a few small dings, spot roll primer, quick rub back, full closed door paint (might have excluded roof) on a celica - $800done.

Stupidly cheap. But hey quick & easy money i suppose
