    Default Rebuilding the LS1

The $500 Stato is smoking a bit more than usual these days and as oil consumption isn't too horrific (and it's still running on all 8) I've been happy to "top up the oil and check the petrol" lately.
The motor is a used replacement from when the original failed on a previous owner.
A couple of mechanics have told me they're not worth rebuilding and just source another used bullet. But as the car isn't needed to get to work on Monday I wouldn't mind having a play.
I don't want a mega horsepower monster just a rebuild with some improvements where they lack (like good valve springs and a performance cam).
    Are they worth the trouble?

    well... that depends

but beware that all the fasteners are single use only
and a full engine kit of those ain't cheap

just a thought... wot about fitting up a stroker kit ?

They do say that, but what the chances of something happening if you re-use them? Probably very slim.. If you do rebuild it properly(with fasteners) you know its all OK.

Have you considered stepping up to a 6 litre instead of rebuilding the 5.7 ?

Check out "Sloppy Mechanics" on Youtube, he made nearly 1000 rwhp with a single turbo 6L using all used stock stuff (engine wise) including re-using all the so-called single use bolts, going even as far as re-using used factory head gaskets. He made 9xx rwhp and bent 4 rods (he later realised it had more timing and boost than he thought), pulled it apart and put 4 second hand rods in it. He put it back together again and it went like a dog, he worked out the piston rings lost tension. So he pulled it apart again and put a set of used rings in it and with less timing and boost he added a 100 shot of nitrous and made over a 1000 atw and it survived. Each time it was put together with used fasteners and never had any failures.

Would I do it like that? Probably not, I'm a little too OCD for that but it shows you can re-use the so-called single use fasteners successfully.

So what caused the "bang"? Was it a fastener failure?

I'd be looking for a 6 litre as the extra torque they have down low you'll never want another 5.7.

yep... sort of (it was overstretched when re-used)
it let a main cap go walkabout

Depends if you can be assed with additional wiring, TB swap and reluctor box.

If so, l98 would be pick of the bunch.

You take your chances... I know people who have stock stuff and run 7000RPM+, then there are the crazies running stock engines with silly amount of boost too... In the end decision is on the person building it.
