(modded for xtra clamping pressure inc a driven plate with reduced springs)
on a 7kg 'steel' Extreme flywheel

Ahh the ole M21 4 speed. I'm sure if your not to nasty to it, it should serve you well with your current combo.
I've actually looked at those Extreme branded flywheels. They seem good value for money compared to others on the market.

    .............
people slam the M21.. coz everyone has broken one
    but
properly prepared, good (that is NOT Chinese) bearings, clearances correct, layshaft oiling modified (standard it is not enough)
AND shifter properly adjusted, it has lasted me.

just do NOT dump the clutch with them .. that is what kills an Aussie box and if you understand the design of them
you will understand why (thankfully most events are rolling starts)

I do replace bearings, check case hardening and clearances plus it gets new 140W competition gear oil every 2 years
(and I NEVER add ATF to ease shifting, even with 140W oil, cold shifting is a doddle as the video shows )

Good one mate. I'm actually going to keep my M21 behind the 308 in the WB for a number of reasons. The engine is going to get a freshen up this Christmas hols and I've got a very good low km (78,000) M21 out of a VK V8 that I'm going to rebuild over winter to put behind it. I'd be keen to get some info off you on the box oil mods me bearings etc. I'm also looking at those extreme branded flywheels as part of my package.
    Nice job on your VK.

if you are going to do a complete rebuild, I suggest you get a CBC Bearings 'kit'... has everything including decent bearings and layshaft thrust washers
( you may have to get it ordered in depending on which store you go to) One thing to note.... the trans extension housing yoke bearing
is NLA if you find the tailshaft yoke has sloppy clearance (which puts pressure on the mainshaft rear bearing.. kills it if there is excess clearance)
Ebay and some trans shops is where you may find one (plus you will need a garage press to change it)

The oiling mods need access to a lathe or mill.. not a biggie for me, our main toolshop at work is about the size of most people's houses

and i suggest you also beg or borrow a copy of the GMH Transmission repair manual.. best one there is ( a Gregorys or Ellerys is hopeless)

    Thanks mate, much appreciated.

I can access a mill and lathe through my brothers work. I'll touch base later on these 'oil mods' unless you can message or email me something. Thanks again

no secret on the oiling mods.. I only copy what one HFirth did on the L34 Toranas ( which ran Aussie m21s) to increase oil supply.... mainly to the cluster and nose of the mainshaft
when you get closer to doing it, drop me a pm
