.. the last normal track day at Sandown that I did was a Supersprint back in February... and I didn't think you meant that
(the Porsche 240 had 35 odd cars out there during the event)

It's an instant turnoff for me when I see a nice first gen race car and then find an LS under the bonnet.

I loved the cars from the Grp C & Grp A era, it's a trip down memory lane hearing the Holden V8 on full song in these cars.
    .. thanks Daz

you will have noted in my intro above that I specifically set out to build a car to the Grp A race specs of the era.. and that of course
means a holden 308(or 304) with carby (no EFI here) and a 4 speed (or allowed is the later 5 speed)

Most new guys stick an LS1 (or even LS3) in when building up now due to 3 things.. speed/power output, ease of parts supply
and reliability. It took me probably 4-5 years before I got a level of reliability and only then did I start chasing some more mumbo

I am happy to run a 'plastic' because even if I am not the fastest (no way can i complete with a 400fwkw LS3) I am happy to
run somethign more authentic (even some of the stickers are from the 80s )

    Good on ya Smitty.
It's nice being happy with what ya got.
I keep dreaming of some amazing package that will win. But you literally need endless pockets for that lark.

    thanks...

and I have a laugh when I am out there doing it enjoying it... coz I know there are guys there at the circuit with me
that have spent more on an engine (or in some cases.. just the brakes) than I have spent for the entire car!

My 2nd outing (mentioned above) cost me a radiator (no big deal coz that was all the damage) but on the same day
one of the runners with a track based VY HSV (no rego full cage etc) with a new LSx race engine.. had it go bang BIG TIME
on his 2nd or 3rd lap at T11 at PI.

I helped push it onto the trailer and caught his missus having a go at him.... coz THAT $30,000 he spent on the engine
would have gotten them a nice holiday.

Similarly, if you happen to make a mistake (even at a club level race event).... and yes another ex-HSV

I'm totally with you on that
I've had a similar theme from the beginning with my VH, but of course I'm somewhat limited/restricted because it's also a street car

The cost of aftermarket performance bits for these engines certainly make them an expensive engine to bring to a competitive level with the LS engines, but like yourself, for me it isn't just about the hp. Every time I take my VH out on the track, I feel like I'm driving the sort of car I used to love to watch legends like Brock race back in the 80's.
And I've had a few comments from people who have watched about how they love the sound of the Holden. Even one of the guys I know who races a quick VT racecar in the QTCC series said he still loves the sound of the Holden over the LS

Would be good to see your VK in action, need to post up some of those videos
you can't put a price on FUN

    hmmm... a 4yo thread

.. that should work fine on the race track (if it is as described)

the wider front track from the VR arms will give lots of neg camber (nothing wrong with that on the circuit)
but will restrict you a bit with wheel/tyre size on the front (go big..and it will rub on the guard)
I run a 17x8 wheel with 245/45 rubber with the VK bottom arms and on full compression it just touches the guard
the VR arm will be worse

    Thanks.
    Im using group c flares.
I want to run bilstein inserts just not sure what strut to use.

Thinking outside the box, would spacing the lower mount on the vs strut help neutralize the excessive camber when used in the gen 1 body?

grab an adjustable top strut mount.. and run that ( I do)
You then have a lot of adjustability for the set up

    yeah...
its currently in the shed having some springs changed (differing rates being tried front and rear)
plus I am throwing on a set of pacemakers to see if they do any better than the HDT (HM) extractors
I am currently running. Has also had a couple of outings this year (at both CAMS multiclub and a Tampered day)
so it gets the once over (safety check, oil leaks, etc). Needs new rocker covers gaskets (LH is leaking)
and I lost the heat wrap from around the starter motor so that need replacing ....
