Default Vehicle speed signal sensor 92 vp v8

I have recently completed a 304 VP engine conversion in to my 75 HJ ute, the engine was auto, I have converted it to manual with a toyota R155 gearbox, everything has gone reasonably smoothly with your usual hiccups, the problem I am having at the moment is that when I'm decelerating I have a lot of backfiring and when I come to a stop the engine dies, I have used this site to figure out the ecu is not getting a speed signal,I have bought a auto meter gauge and calibrated it to read the correct speed, on the back of the gauge there is a signal out terminal I have connected this to the VSS in wire of the ecu but the fault code still reads code 24 VSS fault,

Sorry if there is already a post about this on the site, I am new to this site and am lucky I got this far

    Cheers for your help

The ECU requires a square wave (the original sensor is a hall effect) input, the original is 2 pulses per revolution (sensor outputs 10 but the factory speedo divides by 5). If your speedo outputs a square wave it will work, but not if its a sine wave (like a magnetic reluctor output). If the number of pulses per kilometre needs changing you will have to modify the tune.

You can buy an inline speed sensor that screws into the box and the cable scews in the end of it. As above it will be 2 pulse per rev to match the ECU, but to do it properly you also need to get the memcal changed so that the PPK constant (pulse per kM) matches your tyre size and diff ratio, and then as you have a differnet gearbox the speedo cable output will be different again. So figure out how many pulses per kM a 2 pulse per rev speed sensor will give when screwed insline with the speedo cable and get the memcal constant changed to this.

    Cheers for the help,

I am getting very close to solving my problem, I have an electronic speed sensor and gauge I have ditched the cable drive,

I have looked into the gauge output signal and found that it produces a +5V square wave signal, I have been looking at the signal that needs to go to the ECU and I understand it needs be 2 pulses per revolution as said before, also mentioned a memcal can u program them yourself or do you have to pay a Specilast moon money to do it?

Do you know what signal voltage the ecu needs (+ or -) and if I can amplify the signal from my Auto Meter gauge to work?

    Cheers for the help

I'm guessing there is no way to contact immortality in a private message or is it hidden somewhere?

Ok I have been to Robertson's instruments and told them my situation they made a little tiny interface to go between the speedo and ECU, i put it in and i could feel the car surging under acceleration, then i got home and no change still acting the same as before.

I took the car out to them again yesterday and they hooked an oscilloscope up to it and said my signal is "noisy", so i tried connecting the interface directly to the speed signal on the gear box still no change, my next step is to use shielded wire maybe that mite " quieten " the signal down,

Does anyone else have any better ideas, I'm getting real sick of the high idle and cutting out when i stop

Cheers for the help I have solved the stalling problem by getting a new memcal installed as suggested, the new problem is that the car surges at idle and will bog down and loose 100% of power when I'm sitting in traffic or just idling, and I hear the fuel igniting in the plenum, my suspicions are Hall effect sensor or fuel pump, it does it when the engine gets to about 95 degrees, usually runs at 88 degrees, if anyone else has had this problem and solved it, it would be a great help if you could enlighten me.

    Cheers
