Default HQ onto WB chassis for just a project to keep busy

    Hi everyone,
I'm 16 years old and my dad and his friend have changed their chassis from a WB to HQ to get past the ADR's and stuff, so i've received the WB chassis and I've never taken on something this big.
I have rebuilt a motorbike but that didnt take me long. I have a HQ ute shell laying around and Ive joined this to get some help while i build this as im doing this without my dads help. i have a few questions.
    1. Do most things line up the same?
    2. is there any rubber body mounts under $200 it doenst matter what quality. i had a thought if i cut up an old basketball or tyre and use a few washers would it do the same job?
    3. what engine should use 327 or 454 if dad lets me if not should i go for a 253 or 308?

and if anyone has cheap parts near Echuca it would be handy, i know most things wont be cheap as people know what its worth now.
Also im looking for a bit of mechanic work In Echuca or surrounds preferably old cars but anythings good for me i just wanna leave school.
    Cheers Johnny

Good work mate! A lot of things are interchangeable hq/wb. Stick with a Holden v8. Too hard making a Chev legal in a WB chassis. You should be able to get body mounts for under $200 from Oldskool in Somerton, Melbourne. He is good to deal with. Good luck, do your research and don't rush. The end result will be worth it 👍

    Hi
Cheapest and easiest is to buy a complete car preferably a v8 version although 6cyl would be ok and mix and match your parts from there .

The body mount idea wont work even for a bush basher . The construction of the bush firmly locates the body to chassis.

Generally a car is matched to the body for which the ADR is plated . The chassis is irrelevant . The chassis is treated the same as an engine . My chassis numbers on my cars are not even recorded

^^^They must do things different in QLD???? In NSW the chassis number is recorded as the VIN number, what do they use as a VIN in QLD?

HQ body on WB chassis is do-able but the first question that needs to be answered is what do you intend to do with this ute when finished? The correct advice will be different for a paddock basher than it will be for a car you plan to register and drive on the road.

here in vic its a lot more restrictive, but my dads built his 1954 Chev pick up and he had the hq chassis that was made just before all the emissions and stuff came in

Personally I would track down a decent hq chassis for it as it will make it easier ie not having to run all the pollution gear of the wb model . As mentioned above Vic roads will record the chassis number and will have to comply to the adr rules of that year it was produced . I have a friend that wrecks hq~wb I can pm you his details , he is based in Geelong but ships Australia wide

Not sure that I'd go to the trouble of mounting the HQ body on the WB chassis to paddock bash if the plan is to use the HQ body down the track. If you have the bits to get the WB chassis mobile get some help and turn the WB chassis into some sort of buggy. Build a safe roll cage, make a floor and some seat mounts. Mount a steering column and some pedals (accel, brake) off the front of the roll cage and paddock bash it to your hearts content without having to worry about damaging the HQ body. It's pretty much 2 separate projects (paddock basher & eventually a street car) so In my opinion it would be better to put away the good stuff (HQ body, etc) for the future project and get together some more junk parts to turn the WB into a paddock basher.

    HI
Had my HQ registered in 3 x states
None of these states had records of chassis No. Yes for engine and vin number .

Road transport in any state WILL f,,k u around plenty if u let them . Need to no your rights

mudflaps on a road bike WTF just been for roadworthy was on a Friday Courtesy of counter jockey
State to state transfer re-engineer a properly designed modification RTA claimed I had to reapply BBBBB BS Quick phone to engineer and lawyer sorted that out
attempt to class factory option as modification Courtesy of counter jockey !!

Replacing chassis in a vehicle is not a mod that requires any approval . Think about the accidents and how many frames have been changed .

RTA insist on some machinery having 2 registration another BBBB BS .

Swampy , please stop giving out false information, what you said may apply to qld but it does not apply to Victoria . As already mentioned in this thread Victoria use the details of the chassis number to register a vehicle , like you said many chassis have been swapped out over the years , I personally had a hz Ute that had a chassis swap to a hx panelvan chassis and it was registered to the hx chassis number !

I know that in nsw when people were airbagging the later model hilux’s they would use the earlier Hilux chassis and do a body swap as the later model hilux came with a drivers airbag meaning that they could not airbag the front and get it low enough as it would not pass engineers, once they used the earlier chassis it was registered as that year chassis and was built to that years rules and regs.

So like said please don’t give him information that is not correct to Victoria .
