Default 304 with rear (ish) mount turbo in GQ Patrol

    Hey Guys,

Ive had a good ol' 304 in my Patrol for years and years, ive always enjoyed it, but in the back of my mind knew it wasn't exactly powerful, after putting a 1.4t camper on the back....that thought came to the front of my mind very quickly! My GU 4.2 Diesel has waaaay more power and torque, and that just doesn't seem right!

My ute already has a Hacked Delco 808 running $12P, a girdle, roller rockers, and what ive been told is a cam with the same specs as a Crane 276 (HeatSeeker HS30A). The engine has never been professionally tuned, but I wouldn't say its 'much' more powerful that a standard engine. (Ive run both in the ute)

Im not into spending big bucks on this old girl right now, and have no room under the bonnet for a turbo, so seriously considering putting a budget rear'ish mount turbo just behind the ute cab, which is about 1m away from the end of the VN style headers. Im really only planning to run around 7psi for starters with no intercooler etc. If I could get around 140rwkw I think that would tow the camper well. (On 35" tyres with 4.3 diff gears)

So far, the things that I understand I need are :

    1) 2 Bar Map Sensor
    2) Bigger injectors
    3) Turbo
    4) Oil Scavenge pump with small fabricated sump

Where im falling down for the moment is that I really have no idea what turbo, or injectors I might need to get this working.

Would any of the gurus be able to help me out with some specs please ? Someone told me a HX50 might be the go but it seems too big ??

    Thank you!

    Glen

PS, If anyone lives around Ipswich, QLD and would have time to have a quick listen to my engine, I would really appreciate it!

You could pick up a Garrett GT3540 from a BA/BF XR6 Turbo cheap as they're stacked 10 high at the tip because everyone upgrades them, it's a little undersize but given it'll be rear mounted it would spool quickly and they're still good to 275-300KW at the wheels on an XR6T so it'll do you fine for your purpose.

Or the Garrett GT3576 from the FG XR6T or GT3582 from the FPV F6 - any would do, I reckon you'd find a nice one at a wrecker somewhere sub $1000 or new out the box at a turbo specialist sub $2000.

'Ford Racing' 47LB/Hr injectors are cheap, it's a rebranded genuine Bosch EV14 injector at less than half the price - I've got the 24LB/HR Ford EV14 injectors in my NA 304, they fit in the rail fine I just needed to swap the orings from the original Bosch EV1 injectors over.

You'll need 8x Jetronic to USCAR adaptors to use the injectors with the old loom.

You'll need a fuel pump - I have a Walbro GSS342 in tank 255L/hr pump in my VS, which would probably do the trick:

But I'm going to upgrade to a 460:

I have a boost referenced rising rate fuel pressure regulator as well, but you may not require, I'm using a turbosmart FPR800:

With MAP sensor I'm using an aftermarket ECU with internal 3 BAR sensor but I imagine a 2 BAR sensor that works with the Delco ECU would be cheap.

My car isn't boosted yet but I'm working towards it.

With that turbo it'll probably come on boost around 2000 RPM or even sooner - it'd be torquey as ****, they're internal waste gate, factory gate spring is good to about 10 PSI - you're safe there.

A Nissan with a Holden engine and Ford go fast bits - what a combination!

Thanks very much mate, I appreciate the offer. Do you think the smaller injectors will still work ?

That lux sounds tuff mate! Do you have any vids or pics of it ? What made you go to the Haltech ? Easier to tune ?
