    Default Grout Filling

Fellas. What’s your thoughts on half grout filling blocks for street duties. Do they overheat easily? Saw a 4 bolt converted block, half grout filled for 1500. Thought it could live in the pool room until my first motor goes bang.

Haven't tried it personally, but seems to be two schools of thought.

[1] Because there is less coolant volume when you use grout, the water is returned to the rad more quickly & more heat removed. There is an old wives tale that the longer the coolant is left in the rad, the more heat that is removed. That myth is dispelled in the link below.

[2] The engine will run hotter because there is less coolant to carry away the heat.

I have seen claims that, with grout, some people have cooler running engines, others run hotter. ??? I would love to see a proper scientific test.

Never tried it myself but I have heard that engine oil temps will be higher due to the lack of cooling in the lower block. The solution to that is to fit an engine oil cooler.

The guy on youtube (Griffs rearmount turbo) just did the half grout job. Noticed more stable coolant temps but higher oil temps (by way of reduced oil pressure).

David Vizard did some testing where they elevated oil temps and maintained or lowered coolant temps and made more power with the higher oil temps (obviously staying within the recommended max oil temperature for what ever oil you run).

Oil temps will be higher. Put a filter in the top hose to catch all the sediment that will wash out of the block and wreck your radiator. Haven't noticed much difference in water temps.

    Scientifically measured. YMMV

Have half grout filled block here. Noticed oil temps rose about 20*C in the data logger, put an oil thermostat and cooler on, problem solved. Coolant temps are about the same as before.

As others have said..... I didn't notice any increase in coolant temp but the oil temp did increase.

That was with a SBC filled to the welsh plug holes.
