The final assessment is always on your own car. Its great to hear info from engine builders though, more motors than I will ever see. I was running an Aussie full synthetic in my car and it was burning a lot of oil with a fair bit of blow by. The oil was tacky not oily if that makes sense. It also came out tinged red which means it had oxidised. I changed to Synpower at the same weight I was very tempted to go 10 higher thought all the usual things rings etc. The Synpower was actually slightly 'lighter' at 100c. Anyway long story short 6000kms, 2 dyno tunes, couple of long trips and peak hour. Zero blow by and zero oil used overall. Even the dyno operator commented saying it didn't even blow a puff of smoke. That was at 450rwhp@16psi not a holden though hence full syn. I was put onto synpower 13 years ago on a Nissan I had. Don't worry I had a vrss with a 355 after that but didn't hear of vr1 until later. And everybody told me only mineral oil for the V8 and I had always used penrite on my 308/304's when I was younger. 2c

So whats the go with mineral oil in our Holden v8? Shane from come told me to run mineral oil years ago and now reading that the best oils are like the higher psi synthetics for our flat tappets. Whats to big idea with mineral oil?

You cant go wrong with a good mineral oil for a 308.

I think VR1 10w-40 semi-syn would be worth a try from what we have heard in this thread.

It’s funny you mention COME racing, in the mid 90’s my brother bought a 355 stroker from them (VN heads, Hydraulic FT cam, just over 400hp, it was turn key and came dyno run in on mineral oil). One of the oils they recommended to use was Shell Helix Plus, 15W50 semi-synthetic.
He used it for years and never had an issue with the cam.

After having used synthetic oils for many years I changed to the 20-50 oil that Valvoline recommend.
I looked on line and found that Woolworth's were a lot cheaper than Repco or any of the others.
They were selling the same oil for $16 for four litres. When I got there they were having a special
and selling them for under $14. They only had three in stock otherwise I would have taken more.

    Don't you like your engine?

I'm surprised you would still have good oil pressure and flat lifters...

Yea, I don't know if they have improved the old formulas but the VR1 and the full synthetics (Synpower) and the other semi synthetics are very good.

Perhaps ignorance on my part. I dialed in my utes details and that one was first on the list. I don't have an oil pressure gauge but it seems to run okay.

It will be fine just change after 1000ks or so if you're worried. Its a cheap oil flush then.

There are many people, me included, using syn oil in our engines when it is probably overkill & mineral or semi syn would be perfectly ok. Syn oil just makes me sleep better..

I used Mobil 1 full synthetic in my solid cam 308 for over 20 years in complete ignorance. Valve clearances never changed. Cam and lifters are on the shelf awaiting their next engine. Since then, in my 355, I've been running 10/40 Penrite semi syn to get the high pressure down a bit. Seems all good. I've had my eye on the Valvolene VR-1 10/40 for a while now and after the good recommendation I'm swapping to it.
