Default Need help. Crazy oil pressure cold crank, blowing filter o ring out

Hi all, ive recently started having a problem, happened twice now that when cold cranking my 355 it builds extreme pressure to the point it pushes out the filter i ring, well in excess of 100psi.
I understand its cold but had no issues last winter.
Engine was running 25/70 oil which i know is thick and turns out incorrect oil (long story, previous owner gave me wrong info).
Ive got 20/60 in it now but still concerned theres an issue.
Especially since car is efi now and fires immediately, at least with carby i had a chance of catching it.
Any thoughts on what to look for.
When it behaves pressure is good, around 70 cold and 20 hot idle.

Check the relief valve isn't sticking.

How do i actually check that, is it pump off or just in car.

It lives behind the big nut/bung on the underside of the pump body behind the filter as it sits on the engine, you should be able to get to it in the car with the pump in place. Just make sure you put a drain tray under it and be mindful of the relief spring pressure as you undo it.

Sorry probably should have worded it different.
I know where the valve is but what am i actually looking for if it is sticking, how would i check it.
Is it just a matter of removing spring and shims if it has any and pushing the valve.

Pretty much, the little piston should just slide freely in it's bore and fall out easily once you remove the nut/bung and relief spring. If it's sticking try a little screwdriver or stick magnet to dislodge it and see from there. It might end up being necessary to remove the pump to have a closer look, it maybe needs a bit of fine emery to dress the bore or piston.

I had one stick on initial start up on the dyno once which fattened up the filter nicely but didn't blow the seal. We swapped pumps at the time so not to waste too much time but when I pulled it apart afterwards it just needed a bit of oil in it. There must have been a bit of moisture got in that caused it to stick and once pulled apart and oiled I refitted the pump and it never gave any trouble again.

Ok cool. Funnily enough its really only done it after sitting for extended periods, being cold and yeah maybe some condensation, i hope anyway.
Cheers mate ill see how it goes.

have had same issue. releif stuck seen guage swing past 80psi at 2000 rpm with 15w40 oil. when warm it was fine. im guessing the alloy housing expanded more than the steel valve. i removed the pump as it was a mongrel to push the stuck valve out from where that little cup plug goes in. dressed the valve with emery. cleaned it all up oiled it & didnt cause any more issues

Evl253 sounds very similar, looks like i might be taking the pump off.

Remove the oil pump, strip, check the relief piston & spring (make sure no one has packed the spring up with a spacer/s), if it looks like its been damaged or seized replace the oil pump with a standard good quality one (not high volume). Drain engine oil, replace oil filter & try Penrite HPR 30.

    Yep hpr40.
Engine has hpr30 in it now with new oil filter and started with no issues straight after.
I'll be curious to see how it starts this weekend cold with hpr30 in it first, I'll have a check of the spring through the week and if no good I'll pull the pump.
No harm in trying first i guess.
    Cheers Chris.
