Default Holden 304 rebuild approx cost

Hi everyone just aftervs genersl idea on how much i should be looking at to rebuild an injected 304 from a vr commodore. Ive found a 2nd hand motor but banking on it might need a rrbuild its complete minus gearbox no computer alternator power steer starter etc no extractors. Im told its a runner. How much are they worth and how much to do a rebuild.

Full rebuild, absolutely. Machining and head reco to suit a decent cam is close to 3-4 k. Then moving from a red 308 to a efi motor is new manifold, exhaust etc. Its around $40 a pop just to R&R your pistons onto your rods. Basic rebuild if the bores and pistons aren't toast will definitely be cheaper of course.
As stated in Mad Max, Speed is a question of money. How much do you want to spend?

bfhoon why don't you rebuild the motor you already have?

    I’m with you Castiron355....

Bfhoon, Pull your engine, strip it down and do as much as your tech skills allow you to do.
Then find yourself a known good engine builder and discuss your needs and budget. Good engine builders are experienced and this comes with a cost and rightfully so, Quality costs cash...

Ask yourself realistically, “How much power and torque do I need, How will this new power effect my current driveline, will my driveline need an upgrade to handle this new power etc etc...

    All this costs cash

Buying another so called ‘good second hand engine’ could end up just buying more problems....

    Bfhoon, good luck...

Id be interested in a cost on this also, I understand that once engine is pulled apart then you know the true cost of the rebuild ?

    :-)

Engine rebuilds are like a piece of string, it all depends on how you put it together; with GOOD BETTER or BEST components, what hp you're searching for, what you're going to be doing with it, then the costs fluctuates.

You can find engine rebuilders/machinists that do $4000.00 for a "recon" 308 engine (strip, chemically clean, hone/bore, pistons, rings, bearings, std cam, lifters, decarb heads & simple valve job), but you can also pour $15k into a good quality 355 stroker producing a very drivable 400hp for a weekend cruiser!

I agree with 46Crab, strip your engine figure out what you have got & give it a simple tickle up if you short on funds.

Sort out the compression ratio, select a good cam, tickle up the heads & get the right inlet manifold to suit your bottom end!

My basic refresh cost $1300 10 years ago, all bought from supercheap.
New grant rings, new acl bearings, new jp oil pump, adjustable roll master timing chain and sprockets, acl gaskets, new hyd cam n lifters, crane lt1 springs, crane retainers and collets, new waterpump, welsh plugs + $500 for hone and assembly from an oldmate.

Parts price can get out of control real quick. Keep it basic

I’m not trying to put a downer on the situation. Just saying that for my motor I ebayed/gumtree’d for a good 2-3 years to get the parts I required. If it was all over the counter with a fat shopping list I would have spent waaay more than around 10k. The clutch cost me $850. Granted I basically started with a block and everything else was replaced.

Bfhoon. You may be on to a good thing with the motor you have. If it was a boosted motor it may already have had a recent rebuild. If that’s the case a piston swap and hone with some bearings will get your compression back and away you go. Probably for around 2 grand.

    Good luck.
