Default .. don't think its the plug, need new engine

well... had some fun at Phillip Island (Vic Supersprint Champs)

until the engine stopped that is . Had been stuck on the dummy grid
for the 2nd run .. coz of a gaggle (right word?) of geese that decided to use
the main straight as a runway. 'Bout 20 of the buggers ...and it took circuit
staff and event officials about 20 mins to clear them, so the old girl was well
hot (temp gauge sitting just over 90) when they flagged us away.

Thing is... approaching T4 on the warm up lap, couple of knocking noises and
the engine stopped. Got a tow back into the paddock and I thought yep.... usual
bloody problem, head gasket is a goner.

Pulled No8 plug when it cooled down... covered in 'cream'

yup.. head gasket! until I pulled out No6. ooops NOT healthy this

got it home, pulled the passenger rocker cover, all ok there, no dropped valve. But No coolant in the rad so I drained the sump, over 8 litres of oil and about 12 litres of coolant came out!
and then I lifted the carb off. WTF? alloy metal in the inlet manifold...???

hmmm.... lets pull off the inlet manifold OUCH
very ugly... is that the remains of a piston in there?

am now in the process of stripping stuff off to yank the engine, will it be a boat anchor? time will tell

Crikey's right. Looks like piston bits floated up there. Cast pistons?

If ya gonna rev it, race it, or basically do anything but cruise it, then one of the first upgrades is forged pistons.
Yes I know plenty get lucky with nice stories.

talking to the guys today .. who did the block machining, engine balancing and supplied/fitted up the pistons (not mentioning who atm )
they are a tad taken back. They reckon these ACL Race pistons should take 10.4 comp + 6700 revs easy. (that is me) ....which is why
they supplied them to a lot of hipo race 308 engines.

They want a gander once I have pulled the engine...

Yes they should do. How much timing? More than 28 is too much for me.
    Exhibit A ... bits.

    timing 14° initial 30 max
should not be a problem I reckon
(engine has run 4 seasons with that)

I'm sure cast pistons would be fine for the occasional spurt to 7000 or so rpm, but for sustained high rpm use it'd be a different story I'd think!

Very interested to see what you find. Hopefully you can salvage the block at the very least!
