    Default HSV 185i 5L mods

    Hello guys,

I've managed to obtain myself a nice VSIII Caprice, HSV 185i variant.

Its got 113,000km on the clock.

At the moment the only mods it has on it are a catback exhaust and it appears to be shift kitted as it shifts gears nice and hard.

I noticed these have been released:

Aluminum Cylinder Heads - Holden - Performer RPM - Edelbrock, LLC.

Are a set of alloy heads a decent upgrade to an otherwise standard engine aside from the HSV cam and exhaust? Also will they fit with the standard banana manifold and EFI setup?

I'm considering a turbo conversion as well, I've got two 45mm turbosmart wastegates sitting around at home new in box, and looking at a Wolf V550 ECU to run it all as they do a plug in kit and I think it can control the auto unlike the Haltech GM Sport.

I'm only thinking of running 8-12 PSI to give it a bit more go but nothing too serious, maybe a Borgwarner SXE361 turbo, don't want to rev it past 5000 RPM as per its factory redline, want some nice low down muscle, if we could turn 220-250KW at the wheels I'd be happy.

I'm considering either the turbo conversion or the Yella Terra supercharger kit,:

    http://store.yellaterra.com.au/holde...n-intercooled/

I'd prefer turbo but if the charger kit gives good gains and is much less messing about I'd consider it.

    Thanks.

It will have the stock Holden cam. 185kW engine over 165kW was as simple as:

    Cold air intake.
    Exhaust.
    Knock sensor & patch harness.
Memcal with tune and knock sensor detection.

Alloy heads are nice but not really needed to make the power goals you have described.

Save your money and put it into saveyourgearboxfund and a good convertor.
The s361exe would be ok but I think you would be a little better going slightly bigger ie up to the 66.
With a 5l it's ok for it to have a little lag and can make it just that little bit nicer to drive around normally.

My 308/304 is about as basic as it comes
Facebook spec stock vp bottom end with 280k km plus on it
I put new bearings in bottom end and ground some casting flash out of the valley.

Hq heads, Camtech cam, redline intake manifold, qft carby, mallory programable ignition,
Proboost 66mm T04Z clone etc etc Only has 11psi and has done for several years.
I'm so lazy I didn't even put an intercooler in.

250kw meh I give no **** for hp as never been on the dyno. It probably makes around that, hp is not the thing about a boosted v8 torque is a totally addictive alternative that pulls way past lock you up and throw away the key speeds in a manner that is just effortless if you can get traction.

Imo the stock motor bar a set of valve springs and maybe a cam will get you past your goal turbocharged.
May want to check ring gaps and open them up slightly.

Your 45mm gate should be fine if placed in an effective position.

    Thanks for the replies fellas.

With turbo location do you have any photos under the bonnet of your setup?

Stick it anywhere you can fit it. Lol

Pics of mine will not help you as my setup is a fair bit different
    Ie
Mine is a rear mounted turbo.
Mine is a hq-wb engine bay.

Most with that era commode lower the alternator a bit and place it in that vicinity

Dont know about the ECU, but the 185I was a Holden 5 litre V8 or in the old money 304 cu inch, i think Vs was the last of the holden V8, next gen was 5.7L which was the LS1, a totally different engine so most likely different ECU as well.

everyone forgets VT first came out with the venerable Holden 5.0 engine
before on SII they swapped it for LS1

5.0L was still for sale after VTII was finished, the last VS utes with V8 were sold not long after VX was released so VS was actually the last Holden to have the EFI Holden 5.0L / 304ci engine.

If you're looking to see if it is actually 185kw, you need to look at the memcal. You can't tell by looking at PCM. You need to take the cover off. The memcal should be blue.
I have seen wreckers write 185kw on the outside of these and claim it is the 185 tune when it is stock.

How much fuel do these things normally use, I'm mostly doing a 100km highway round trip and doing about 22L/100km at the moment.

I noticed the temp gauge isn't budging off cold but I think the gauge might be toast.

I'll check if it has a thermostat in it and if the temp sender is working correctly.

Yup that worked for the fuel gauge but the temp one no dice.

Might have to pull cluster out and send it off for repair.

Gauge sender can die off. Check that before pulling cluster
