Simple fix of re-soldering 3 pins in dash cluster usually does trick for gauges but may also have dud temp sender..earth wire to see what gauge does.

Don't have to bash the dash just tap fuel gauge with finger.

I'd be checking fault codes if that's you fuel usage

If series 3 with maf it could have 5/0 vt replacement ecu but that won't tell you much untill check memcal

I'm getting about 360km out of a tank 90% highway driving, I'll check the gauge sender and I'll change the thermostat as well it may be stuck open as the heater takes a long time to work and even on max heat its not that warm.

I've really upset the neighbours with it starting and idling in the morning, I'm going to change the exhaust so its a bit quieter, previous owner made it extremely loud.

I'm thinking of keeping the HSV headers and going 2 1/4" twin, twin high flow cats, H pipe and some high flow mufflers to quiten it down at idle but still sound nice up top hopefully, then when the turbo stuff happens I'll change it to a single 3" or something.

Its the model with the MAP sensor.

I think I found the problem:

Check out engine coolant temperature, thats after a 30km drive, it sits around 61 degrees on the highway, I'm assuming the thermostat is stuck open or its not in there.

It got up to 81 degrees moving through some heavy traffic in town but thats about it.

So you reckon it keeps falling back into warm up mode and dumping more fuel in that way.

If thermo is in there, maybe sensor is dying? ?

Yeah the exhaust tip is really black too, I got another sensor and thermostat from Repco so I'll change both.

Is there two sensors though Repco only had listing for one sensor, I'm guessing the one to run the gauge as its only got 2 pins?

Correct, 1 sensor for the ecu and 1 sensor for the cluster.

I say fix the bugs and give it a good thorough service and clean, get everything running nice before changing things.
I think you can probably pick up the power you want with just an, exhaust and cam change, head reco, maybe bigger valves, and maybe some match porting on manifolds.

The one with 2 pins is for the pcm coolant temp sensor (has a connector the same as injectors). The sender for the gauge only has a single wire.

I'm yet to rectify the running too cold issue as my tools are locked up in a storage locker at the moment but I've been scoping out a cam to start off with, keen on low down torque so would like to keep the bananas if possible and don't want to go too aggressive on the cam.

    https://www.comeracing.com/catalog/k...l-kit-vn-vs-v8

The first one on the list, 205KW camshaft.

    Or:

    CAMTECH CAMS - 304 & 355ci stroker VN-VS 1988-1999 (EFI heads) Camshafts & Components

    Either of the first two

    Or:

    https://www.kelfordcams.com/nz/camsh...-camshaft.html

Also Wade 963A961A10 but Wade no longer exists unfortunately, reports say this is a good cam for a heavier car like the Caprice, has better low down torque than the stock cam.

It sits on about 1800 RPM at 100km/h, seems a bit tall, anyone changed gears to 3.45/3.73 and what was the results like? Do they have a speedo cable with gear or is it all electronic on the VS?

The exhaust, it has the HSV headers and the previous owner put some crappy stupidly loud droning XForce catback on it, I'm going to book it in for twin 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust from the headers back, twin high flow cats and H pipe once the cold running issue is sorted.

I've got 3.45 in mine recently.
I don't think I've cruised at 100kph to chech yet though.
Your speedo is electronic. You will need a corrector to fix any errors.

Put 3.7 in brother's ol' vs maloo that spent fair bit of time on motorway...really suited the car with thicker wall twin cats, twin 2.5" to single, pacies, shiftkit & otr

Sounded nice, stepped out nicely on gear changes, went quicker than it should have for the mods & he claimed had better economy

Had shifts corrected in memcal but needed speedo corrector for dash.

    Found the gears:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VN-VP-VR-...YAAOSwLF1X7JNr

Is it worth getting something like pacemakers or just keep the HSV headers and fix up the rest of the exhaust? Or do the whole lot? Its way too loud and it annoys the neighbours so at minimum I have to do the headers backwards.

Noticed on Pacemakers website they've got a few different listings:

    Dual cat P5000D or something

Then one for Caprice with variable power steering (Which mine has), but then says it doesn't suit knock sensor model? Mine has variable power steering and I'm assuming knock sensor being the HSV edition?

Never bought new gears only 2nd hand but apparently peeps off here reckon only 1 good brand to buy.

Brother's had pacies...got to say for money going twin cats, shift kit or gears + memcal were better value for money although did sound/rev nicer adding extractors after hsv headers but for stocker engine didn't add much...if you bump compression up a point & add decent cam then yeah extractors will help.

Twin cats, twin 2.5" pipes to twin mufflers then 3" single with resonator still sound nice yet not obnoxious..extractors are b@tch to fit, most likely even harder with variable rack crap.

Why is current exhaust loud,no resonator?

I haven't looked at it on a hoist but I had neighbours complain about me driving it to work in the morning and people up the street, Its fairly loud at idle and drones bad on the freeway.

I'd say at a guess it'd be close to 100db

Scored myself a good second hand Wolf V550 ECU, I'll get the plug in patch harness so thats the start to our mods I guess.

In regards to the cold running issue, I got it to go up to about 1/4 on the gauge sitting in traffic yesterday.

Its going in soon for a birthday.

Also in regards to the exhaust:

    http://www.mantapro.com.au/product/h...win-cat-setup/

Any idea if these work with the variable power steering?

In regards to making her go faster after the initial fixes are done for the cold running, theres a supercharger kit around the corner from these guys:

    https://www.facebook.com/BarnettPerf...ring/?refid=52

I'm figuring the installation of the charger is going to be much easier than a turbo as I can keep the exhaust the same.
