Default Best cam for stock compression 304, with single plane

Just wondering what the most effective cam would be for a completely stock 304 with a single plane and 600 holley. Preferably with a bit of lope to it, but i want it to go faster too and not just sound lumpy if thats possible with stock compression. Car is manual aswell.

Something like a Crane H276 would suit.

Without an increase in compression your choices are limited to smaller cams.

Yeah, that'd be about it . Camtech do one like this one but you can get them to cut the cam on 108 Lobe centres.

With stock compression around 8.8 or so it'll be a dog no matter what.

    Is it a VK-VL 304 or VN-VSIII 304?

Vn-vs 304. Ive a couple spare motors and i plan on building one with high comp pistons etc. But i thought just for the time being it might be worth throwing a cam in for a tad more go and maybe a better sounding idle, plus i can run a mechanical fuel pump again with a new cam. But if holden got the cam spot on in the first place then i wont waste my money i spose.

Mate of mine ran 13.0@109 in a full weight Vnss

    Stock bottom end
    H304
    Active single plane
    Ported and skimmed heads
    4500/t700
    4.11

Surprisingly it worked ok for stock comp.

how far can you shave efi heads. Its in a hq kingswood so probably the same or lighter than a vn ss. Diff is 3.08 ratio though. With a falcon 6 t5 which has a 3.5 first gear ratio. Which kinda makes up for the tall diff ratio a bit.

Check out the cams from Kelford Cams in Christchurch NZ. Similar .050" specs to Crane cams but the .006" are about 10 less so they will work better with a lower CR as they won't bleed off cylinder pressure as much as the Crane cams.

The 170-C looks to be suitable but damn they are expensive...and single pattern.

Their custom ground cams are the same price so you can probably spec different lobes.

What would you recommend if you could go dual pattern?

edit: I like the 170 - E, shave the crap out of the heads and run a 0.027" gasket to get the comp up
