Hyd roller 355 weekend cruiser
i had a small window of opportunity to post something so i thought i would share this engine
finished this one recently and dynoed it yesterday, a really nice little street engine combo perfect for the weekend cruiser with the goal to produce 450+hp and similar TQ with a nice flat TQ curve
requirements for this engine were fairly simple, pull a heavy car away from the traffic lights without needing a 4k plus stall converter, not have to rev it over 6k to make the power and basically be a nice all round low maintenance street engine that packs some punch when needed.........and be light up the bags when desired.
i reckon this engine will do the job nicely , its the sort of engine id like to put in a weekend cruiser ( if i had one ) or for the classic muscle car enthusiast etc
its a late model block ,355 scat crank and rods etc, i did the heads a while back they are a set of my hand ported VN's, not a big port but they flow around 270cfm @ .600 lift
custom comp Hyd roller cam on a steel core 228 @ .050 with .595 lift, match ported TP dual plane intake, QFT750 carb some of the parts were supplied by the owner and we did the rest.
this block had a factory machining stuff up in the #4 cam bearing tunnel and not the entire surface was round meaning there would be excessive leakage and the bearing wouldnt be properly supported ( if i find the pics i took will post them ), lucky #1 cam bearing on a small block chev shares the same size journal as a #4 holden camshaft but with a .020 larger tunnel so we were able to line bore the cam tunnel on #4 to take a chev cam bearing.
heres some pics
the comp rockers do require a bit of work to get sorted right, we had to clearance pushrod holes in the heads

i was aiming for around 460hp with 450+ tq with the power all in by 6000rpm but couldnt say for sure as i havent dynoed a 355 combo similar to this before with a cam this small and a dual plane.....
it made 479HP @ 5800 with 465lbs TQ @ 4800 rpm it has a nice wide power band and a flat TQ curve with over 400lbs from 3500 to over 6000 rpm so it has exceeded my expectations

Nice combo Pete, it proves you don't need a monster cam to make good power with the right mix of components. You could daily drive that easily if you wanted to pay for the fuel.

Nice one Pete. It only goes to show and ive always said it, you dont always need a beastly nasty cam to make good power.

Nice work Pete.
Thanks for sharing.
What size converter/gears would you recommend with something like this?

Thats exactly what i want, now my car is a weekender! As a daily i have the h beam scat bottom end, small cam, head work etc and walkinshaw manifold. Made 410hp and 400torque. Not sure what my heads flow. But i have a set of higgins heads with bigger valves etc. Are you running bigger valves on this?
That power etc is precisely what i am after and have been looking at going hydro roller for a while now.Munch munch turbo for lunch

surprised old pauly isn't in here crowing on about dual planes vs singles 'whip' LOL.......HOLDENS don't leak oil, they simply mark there territory! like a dog p!ssing on a tree

yes jase it would make a nice engine to drive daily and still have some fun
thats it, i was confident it would make atleast 450lbs but wasnt sure how much power it would make, be interesting to do a comparison with a single plane and see how far up it shifts the TQ curve
id love one mate....i remember back in the day when the car we drove to work every day was the car we raced and there was no such thing as having a street car as well as a race car so you raced what you drove every day......this would have been the engine to have then......its tamer but prob still making more power than the old angry stroker i had anyway
depending on what car it was and how heavy a 3.08-3.55 ratio would work fine id still use a 3500 converter with this combo although you could go smaller prob 2800 would still work fine but if you want that tire frying tq instantly when you want it the bigger converter would be my choice

Very nice all rounder. Big angry cams can get pretty tiresome if you want to cruise. I must be getting old...

Hey Pete, what comp you running on this motor? Also is it zero deck? Nice looking build! Do you think it would hit over 500hp with a single plane on it?

I had a HZ caprice that had pretty well everything - even factory spoked/wire wheels and it never had a passenger side mirror. The drivers side was mechanical remote as per Ser1 WB Statesman but the...
