I had a look at the unit just before. It says on the side Air International Melb, registered design RD70897

So Im guessing this was an aftermarket kit offered by air international? The VC would still coincide with the WB ute. is it possible this was sold for the WB and people refitted to earlier models?
    ummm.. nup

and the Air International HVAC system was fitted to both WB and VC (and VH etc)...ex factory
while GMH were running out the older style HARRISON systems at the same time. By the time VH
kicked into production, only Air Internationals systems were being fitted

Got this info over on fastlane:
The system you have there was made by Air International & sold thru GM P & A as the Holden accessory air conditioning system. i.e. Genuine, but not factory-fitted genuine. The Frigidaire system, as installed at the factory (with the large black GM A6 compressor) could not be fitted after the car left the factory, so the next available was this dealer-fitted integrated system.I've fitted several of these, but they're not as good as either the Frigidaire system or an underdash unit.*On several occasions I've removed these at customer's request & fitted a good underdash unit, utilising all of the underbonnet hardware.Dr Terry

Also apparently while not as good as the other systems its fine for a ute cab which works for me.

correct... and guess who got the job of co-ordinating the whole fix it process inside GMH?

the engineers had to be dragged screaming and kicking to the table while the supply guys
(who had to purchase a large amount of only drain tubes... which normally came with the heater case)
pissed themselves laughing while the zone service guys were ropeable as they had to go out to all the dealers
and put into place a 'secret' recall .. as after the recent steering recall on VB there was no way GMH was going to
publicize this piece of stupidity (like everyone knows water will run uphill when you put the drain outlet on top)

This should help you matty12 and anyone else fitting one of these systems or possibly just aircon. Its the original installation instructions dated 12/8/77 and 19/8/77 emailed to me by a member on another forum. I hope its ok to post it up.

it was a 'wrap the electrical tape around the bit at the correct spot' type of quality control as far as the drilling was concerned
    .. remember this was 1978 and 1979

I had one of those intergrated systems in my ute years ago, hopeless really and would not waste money on it. Even the old factory system that I installed was disappointing and now that has gone. I think the vintage air option would be best but would be great to see one in operation. Those old knee freezers work the best.

I sure hope it works out for you!

I wouldnt use the original compressor or condensor, technology has advanced a great deal since those systems were cobbled together. The knee freezers and vintage air still use tube and fin evaps which are pretty inefficient so a new vinatge air is the same as the 70's stuff.

Well it uses the sanden compressor anyhow so modern enough.
I look at it this way, i put it all in and set it up. If I dont find it to work well enough, atleast everythings in the engine bay and ducting ran etc and ill put in a vintage air box. This has apparently had a new evaporator fitted (and looks new) so we will see. Spoke to a couple of guys with them in panel vans and reckon theyre ok so can only wait and see. Working on my mounting brackets for the compressor at the moment.
