    Default 289 vs 302

    So I was looking to buy an old Capri and put a 302 in (mainly because it appears that's the biggest is can go for cert) and I found one with a 289 already fitted, so;
    What parts are interchangeable between the 289 and 302, ie heads intake man crank etc, can I stroke the 289 with the 302 or 351 crank?
    How strong are the 289 blocks? If I later decide to upgrade to a 302 or 351 can I use the heads that are on the 289 assuming they are aftermarket? then does the intake still fit or does the increased deck hieght muck this up?
    If I swap the whole engine out for a 302 will it bolt straight in? Can I use the 289 sump and mounts?
    If I keep the 289 how much can you get out of them?

    289s are a good little engine. and are mostly identical to the 302 windsor, or at least the early pre roller cam ones are...and have good interchangability as far as I know,,, having said that unless a full going over is required the extra 13 cubes would probably be only just noticeable...with that change only.

    The 351 have bigger headstuds, so unless you get a head that is suitable for both stick with a 302 based 8.2" deck height block in a capri.. You can make 347s out of them easy enough with a 3.4" stroke crank, 5.4" rods and pistons to suit..

    302 289 same physical dimensions... A 289 you could get 400HP it will want to scream to 7500+ RPM though...

    I had a XR 289 Falcon wagon that could do 70 MPH in first, C4 locked into low, then a XT 302 same auto same diff ratio topped out at 50 MPH in first, 289 shorter stroke revs harder than 302

    Well if you put better heads, cam, induction on a 302 it will rev to... A 347 with the right induction package might out rev your 289... Its not just the stroke that allows something to rev...

    The little 289/302 are a great little engine... Short deck height at 8.2" very compact, they look like a toy engine...

    can you use the same 347 stroker kit from the 302 in a 289? is the deck height just the same? what is the difference between the bore and strokes of the two?

    yeah you can stroke 289 to 347. far as i know the only difference between them is the 302 crankshaft.. with 1/16" more throw and the rods which are 1/16" longer.

    hmmmm...my hazy memory seems to recall the 289 block may have shorter bores, or was that the 260 block?

    OP may want to check some factory specs for the block dimensions.

    probably 260, but the new motorsports blocks had shorter bores as compared to the dart or stock...

    In all honesty, I would sell the 289 to someone, people with mustangs are always looking for them because 'they rev higher' ... Get a 302 or a Dart block with the money...

    for anything more than a mild build, I agree,, a dart or other quality aftermarket block is a much superior foundation for higher output applications.

    With a Dart SHP block you go straight to 363 cubes + ... I wouldnt waste a Dart on a 347
