    Default 500hp out of a 302

Just wandering how achievable this is? Can't run more capacity as it needs to pass cert and they check engine size. I was going to use the Ford motorsport block, is it better to use a 351 block and run longer rods for better rod ratio? I want to run ITBs, will run E85 on flex fuel.
Would possibly change crank and rods out later for a stroker once it's all running and certified, I think if it can make 500 that will be enough in a Capri anyway. Any more and it will need all the safety gear at the drags and I want a tough street car not a racer.

I would only change out later if I can't make enough on the 302, it may not be worth the hassle, I don't know much about these engines to be honest so I'm just getting a few opinions.

just one of the stipulations is must idle smooth ??? yea right I recall they tried this on me when I took my HQ GTS coupe over the pits to remove a yellow sticker and tried to tell me that it was idling too rough (big solid cam) I told them as it was pre emissions that there was no such requirement and was a High performance version- 010 block 350 (even though it was a 80837 308 originally lol) but as it was Not an emission controlled car they couldn't say shit - however this was a factory car not one that is requiring a mod permit for very different rules but I would still use a old engine even if it was just for licencing

Is it the sort of thing that if you got it certified with a stock ish motor and changed stuff out later that you are likely to get grief from the cops? Like do they have a cert plate on the car and does it have enough detail that they can pick it?

I'm more sort of wondering in this post if 500 HP is reasonably achievable from a 302 or is that pushing the boundaries a little?

You are asking for 1.65hp/c.i which is certainly possible but for how long, who knows?
Then you want to drive this to the registry office and on the street?

Register with a near stock 302 and then down the track start playing.

You could always build a 289 screamer..
You already will have good power to weight ratio..

500hp from a 289 is a big ask! I see where you're coming from... but the op has a number in mind for some reason.

500hp is a nice round number and i think its about as much as i would need in a capri before its going to need a cage and all the safety gear which i dont want to do.
possibly dont need that much its a pretty light car and if i can ill go alloy block and heads.
i will run EFi with ITBs and run flex fuel so will be able to keep the compression up.
i was thinking about coil on plug as well to make the most of the E85 tune, this is all fairly easy for me anyway.
from what i am reading up 500hp still might be a stretch for a 302.
I note someone commented above about it being a head gasket popper, I am surprised this would be an issue with out boost? I expect an after market block and ARP head studs which mitigate that anyway?

I have always mucked around with Jap engines which are quite a bit different so I am just doing some research here and value all the input, cheers.

Hi-po jappas are normally turbo. They are very streetable and docile off boost. A 500hp 302 will not be very streetable. Unless your idea of streetable is screeching the tyres every take off and a min cruise revs of 3000.

Moffat was making more than that in the Mustang nearly 40 years ago ...

    Hi
A 400--450 hp would be a little easier to drive . 500+hp sounds like circuit or drag situation, 4000-8000 rpm sounds like . With the right diff ratio it will work but remember you will always be on the rev . Never a quiet moment ha ha
