Default 1968 XT V8 Ford Falcon vibrations under power

I have a 1968 XT V8 Ford Falcon that I inherited from my father. He bought it new.
It has developed a vibration at around 30mph which goes when I disengage gears (it is an automatic).
There is a bit of play in the universal joints but not what I would call excessive.
When jacked up on rear axle the right wheel does not spin under moderate revs. (I don't know whether this is significant).
I have checked that engine is running on all cylinders and it is.
The vibration occurs at the same speed whether I am in 1st, 2nd or D.
The vibration disappears when cruising above 40mph.
I have replaced transmission oil recently but not the diff. The drive shaft turns pretty freely by hand when in N.
Does anyone have any clues? I would appreciate some help.
    Thanks,
    Bill.

It has come on pretty quickly over the last couple of runs and seems to be getting worse.

Thanks for your reply mnroo. She usually does about 500 to 1000 miles a year but I have been away a last last year and she has sat for three or fours months at a time. The vibration has developed in the last 100 miles or so - short runs of about 20 miles - and is getting worse. I have her jacked up on the back axle at the moment and notice an out of true wobble in the drive shaft at lower speeds.

Sounds like the yoke in the diff or the diff bearings ,Bill. Is it leaking oil from the yoke or behind the brake drums ? Do you know how long ago the diff bearings were either greased or replaced or what condition they are currently in ? Grab the tailshaft at the diff end and wiggle it around to see if there is play in it and failing that , jack the car up and do the same with the wheels. Or take the wheels off and have a look at the bearings. Could also be the diff centre is worn ,too. If none of this turns up a result , start looking at the gearbox side of things. Another thing that is not that common ,but can happen is the shackle bolts / nuts holding the diff may be loose or have moved slightly. Just a thought.

Let us know how you go.
