Default HJ/HZ Tonner Rebuild (Back on Track)

G'Day All, I dropped the ball there for a while but the rebuild is back on track again. I've started a new thread as the old one is a bit outdated and I lost all the pic's so a quick update on what I've got and where I'm at. Started with a 1974 HJ Tonner with a butchered cab cross member due to a poor 4 speed conversion, well rusted cab and a tired 308. Chassis however in great nick and a great base for the project. Plan is a complete ground up rebuild with the finish being a good reliable cruiser to start with so i can enjoy it for a while then we'll go from there.

Engine stripped ready for chemical clean, Bla Bla Bla. At this stage I've planned to rebuild the stock 308 with some minor tweaks to make it a good cruiser for now. Undecided on what will sit behind it at this point? Would be interested on experiences using 5 speed celica or supra box's behind a mild 308.

HZ Cab purchased to replace the original HJ. Not prefect but not to bad in my opion and worth the effort to bring it back.

Removing and repairing old rust repairs done with an oxy.

Horror which lay beneath. Minor hickup but nothing that cant be overcome, just a little bit more thought.

Anyway, there is where I've been and am at, hopefully keep on track this time round and I'll aim to keep those of you that my be interested informed of my progress.
    Thanks for look'n.

Attacked the roof gutter today and am reasonably happy with the result even though it's not finished. I was fortunate enough to find the gutter on the original HJ cab to be in great nic so I transplanted the gutter and some roof section to the HZ cab. It took a bit to get all the measurements right and get it all to line up but I don't think it turned out to bad.

Cheers 'ton-a-fun', I'll keep the thread updated as I progress.

Does anybody know what the Queensland regulation is on removing the heater coil and fan? I was thinking about leaving it out and welding in a blanking plate to tidy up the firewall.

mate dont quote me on this but i think its sweet but you will need a 12v blower under the dash to for blue slip reasons. just dodge it u to pass than take it out.

    I take it the 12v blower/fan is a requirement for a demister?

Chassis and a few other bits and pieces ready for the sand blaster which I hope to drop off on Wednesday.[IMG][/IMG]

Finished the roof gutter today, just a skim of filler and lite sanding left to do. Also dropped the block, crank and cam off to get work done before engine rebuild starts.
Reasonably happy with the gutter result considering it was my first attempt!!

The young bloke has normally got his boots on, he was a bit annoyed at me because he couldn't help yesterday afternoon (had to do home work). How far off are you from rego-ing yours?

Did a few more panel repairs, found an old accident repair that looked like leprosy once all the bog was removed made the decision to cut it out and replace it. Suppose its better in the long run.

Cheers 80gus, steep learning curve but enjoying it all the same. Cant wait to have all the rust work finished though it does get a bit monotonous. Get the block back this week so I'll have something else to do when I'm over rust repairs.
