    Default Engine research for project

    Hey all,

My next project is a 1956 International Harvestor AS120 pickup going onto a HQ chassis, and before I do much more than start to remove panels to restore them, I am doing research on everything.
    Today's topic is the engine.

Going to a HQ chassis gives plenty of engine options from the Holden/Chev range, which is good, because I love the holden v8, but it costs a lot to go fast, so thinking LS may be the answer.
The goal here is a tough looking and sounding weekend cruiser (limited use with small child) and very occasional run down the strip, but needs to be fun and smoke tyres easily at events like powercruise and summernats etc.

    Requirements:
    v8
    Auto gearbox
    500+HP
    Look and sound tough
carb fed or carb style EFI ie Holley or FiTech etc bolt on systems
    no more than 10K budget

I like the look of twin carb tunnel ram, and also 6/71 style blower setups.

I am open to doing engine work in my garage, I should be able to do most things bar machining, and am willing to assemble myself to keep costs down.

I have looked at LS2 and LS3 engines, but even wreckers ask a lot for high KM engines, so I wonder what can be achieved for LS1.

I have looked at SBC crate engines, and they are an easy option but quickly use up budget.

I am looking for suggestions for options and combos that are achievable for somone good on the tools, but not a pro, and keep under the budget.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to hearing your ideas.

How much would a vehicle like that weigh in at?

10 grand isnt a lot to play with, the money disappears fast... You could look at a 4" stroker crank in an LS1 to make a 383, with some headwork and a cam etc

I realise that 10k is not much to spend, but I am excluding things like engine mounts, water pump, alternater etc, probably even exclude carby or efi system cause I know that can easily go past 1-2k.
Just looking at the basic parts to start with, rotating assembly and valvetrain/heads etc.
This will probably be around 2 years before it starts happening, so plenty time to research.
These kind of budget builds are out there, I just need to find the formula.

Buy an LS1 maybe give it a quick reco, check the bore service the heads... Then, they sell tunnel rams for the LS1 from Holley, change cam springs and tune.. You dont need to go to the fitech efi you have a far superior multipoint injection with the LS stuff

Hmm.. LS with blowers etc 10 grand.. dunno about that..
buy a flex plate and harmonic balancer and drop it in.

carb and dizzie included, you can facebook headers 300 bucks, 1000 dollar radiator, on drugs.. you'd need a turbo trans.. performance for 10 grand is pretty iffy, it'd have to be a real cobble together with an LS.. theyre throwaway motors imo

For what you want a ve 6.0 or vz 6.0 donor car/write off would be ideal...10k budget makes it difficult but if you reuse as much as possible from donor car it helps a lot.

Could start with cheaper 5.7 donor cars for 2k-3k if you can find decent one.I've got a vy m6 sv8 thinking about selling

lsironblocks.com.au have decent prices if you just want a long block,fb or gumtree for 2nd hand gear cheap.

    ok heres a crazy idea.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Chevy-LS...r/132664694792
    on top of a LS1.
no idea if this would be any good or give the power I was after, but would look reasonable.
    What do you guys think?

I think the crate motor idea may be the solution though, a bit over 11k gets you a blueprint SBC 396 stroker dressed 485hp.

I'd put a tunnel ram on an LS1 with a cam change, keep it Efi and run 2x edelbrock throttlebodies with the stock GM ECU and have it tuned....

ok so if I was to go down the LS1/2/3 route with tunnel ram, there are a few things I know to change.

    Cam
    Lifters
    valve springs
    retainers
    pushrods
    rocker trunnion upgrade
    head gaskets
    oil pump upgrade
    head studs/bolts

Other than that, should you also change,
    rings
    bearings
    other gaskets

Is there anything else I have missed that needs to be factored in?
Could the average joe do rings and bearings in a home garage?
Can you use a stroker crank with stock rods and pistons? is it worth it?
Aftermarket heads, worth the money or not?

I'm still not keen on EFI but if I could hide it that might work for me.

Thanks to all for your contributions.

On that kind of budget and hp target i would not roll the dice with an unknown engine that you then pull apart and rebuild, i would go crate or turnkey.

As soon as you open up an older motor you risk f**king something up on the disassembly, assembly or just from the dust and foreign material in the air; all your bearings, seals and gaskets might as well be changed and their cost can really add up; you might discover an issue needing more parts or a machinist etc.

Not to mention your time spent holding a spanner and not a steering wheel.
