Default Thoughts on LS combo for HQ. LQ9 LS3 heads, 408 stoker. Vic Jr. comp cams cam.

Hi I was wondering what your thoughts of my planed combo. 6.0L cast iron LQ9 block, GM performance CNC'd heads. lunati 408 stroker kit. Victor Jr manifold, Comp cams 54-469-11 hyd roller cam .231"/.247" @ .050" .617"/.624" lift 113deg LSA. single centre bolt cam. what do you think this would make, going in HQ sedan with T56 magnum. was worried about single bot cam in LQ9, I was looking to use matching timing gear, anything else I need to know? I was thinking of Super vic but not sure they do one for LS3 style heads, only cathederal. will be changing valve springs to suit cam also.

looks like the basis of a good boosted engine to me.

If your not going boosted, you may as well start with a much cheaper second hand alloy 6 litre block.

    What are the heads worth?

Blocks $1150 brand new, heads $1560 a pair complete, i'v heard you can get a lot of core shift in Alloy blocks, I haven't seen many second hand 6litre Alloy blocks for sale and that are much cheaper then a $1150new block.

That seems like a pretty good deal on those heads. should make good power. What comp will you end up with?

I was more thinking of complete engines to start with. Makes things easier when it comes to bolting all the boring stuff together.

hi, comp will be around 11:1 with 68cc chamber, I could shave and bring that up to 11.3:1 with 66cc. I was going for a new block as I can register it easier in Vic then one out of a VE. and will be changing nearly everything anyway.

Just do some research to see if you can get a good timing set to suit the single bolt cam. I had a look a while age and couldn't find any

If it were me doing that combo I'd go alloy block. Iron blocks are damn heavy. I just finished helping a mate build a 402 iron bottom end for turbo setup. Similar combo to yours listed except low comp around 9:1 and turbo cam. Stock ls3 heads and manifold.

yer, i'd like alloy for a bit of wait saving, think a iron LS will be a bit heavier then a 308. Comp cams do a timing chain to suit single bolt cam. anyone have weight differences between LQ9 block and 308 block?

In the grand scheme of things the extra weight of the LQ9 block isnt a real big deal ... You could probably pick the LQ9 block off the deck with 1 hand too ...

I call bullshit. On the juice much Paul. I'd like to see anyone that could lift a iron lq9 block 1 handed. Haha. They are heavy. Make a 308 block feel light.

The LS alloy is around 50kg, and the LQ is 95-100kg .... A dart Ford block weighs that much and I can pick it up and clear it off the deck 1 handed ...

Theres 50kg diff between that and the alloy so its not really that much.

No juice, just arm wrestling and arm curls Easier to use 2 people or an engine crane LOL

All good just stirring shit. But that said you know that your lifting one I don't even bother busting my ass on my own. But seriously I'd still use an ally block over an iron for an na setup. You can pickup 6.0 liters cheap now days and even if you sell what you don't need. It adds up buying all the odds and ends if you start with a bare block. A mate picked up a l77 out of a Ve the other day for 2 grand off eBay that had been removed for ls3 to be fitted. But that said you can easily get 1 for 3 grand.

Yeah if you are making around 600-650HP like this guys engine an alloy LS block would be fine, but all Im saying is if the block is already purchased I wouldnt go out of my way to sell it and then procure another block for the sake of 50 odd Kg of weight ..
