Thread: How do i get good power from a 202 3.3l black motor in a Vk commodore???

Thanks swampy but I’m going to be turning this car into my P plate daily and for legal reasons have to stick with the straight 6 but I thought why not have some fun with it, hense the question on how to improve power from the Straight 6 me and my dad have only ever played around with v8’s this is why I’ve asked on the forum because I need as much advice as I can get

power to around and slightly beyond 200 HP is easy in those engines, but iirc you made mention of fuel economy also

Is it difficult for alright fuel economy and power?? Even if I bought an aftermarket ecu and got a tune?

You can get away with a small cam, Crane used to do a good one under their "Cam Dynamics" brand. I did a mild VK EFI for my VB Commodore a little over 20 years ago with that cam and it ran great. I've just looked in an old catalogue and found the specs, it was 198 @ .050" with .383" lift on 110LC so not big by any standard but a little better than stock.

Talking about early 80's there used to be a strata manifold and turbo kit for the Holden 6. They were the shit for a Holden 6.

Similar response to late XE XF falcon 250 weber carby engines . A falcon efi 250 was a good engine for the times as well . Way better than any early Holden 6 cyl
Tried LPG economy was better slightly performance was way better on leaded fuel .
Now lpg is just to costly
Cubic inches = power and big cylinder heads with a maxed out 1/2 inch fuel line ,, sorry just dream`n

OP give it a read and price up some parts to suit (even without cam upgrade if you must)

The EFI engine is pretty close to XU1 spec to begin with, just do a little maintenance and it will go fine in factory form. However the VN Delco would be one of the cheaper options to upgrade engine management if you needed to (for example if changing cam, which the original controller won't support properly) - but that's a lot of work for a car he can't even drive yet.

of course good tune is essential for both,,, but as always one has to compromise one for the other [power/economy strength/weight etc] in varying degrees..

depends on how you're into it.. i started working on my first car when i was 14.
