    Default HQ Circuit Racer

the last couple of years i have been punting my old hz ute around a few local tracks for a bit of fun and its pretty awesome to drive 300km to and from a track with it with no dramas the body is a little tired and i am expecting a bad result from the boys in blue

I have always wanted to get a race car and although i have the skills and determination for the build of one i lack time and money also i already have too many projects so one popped up for ok money that wont take too much effort to get race ready but its a bit loud

i havent picked it up yet but i will this week and i am also trying to set up the pics so we will see how it goes

Tough break mate. Hopefully all turns out well.

Should be a little screamer of a 202 though with the right carbs and a 173 yella terra head, will be pushing 10.5:1.

thanks for the kind words nothing has been easy. The bastard cancer metastasized into other organs which has made healing painful and problematic (despite a huge setback this week requiring more surgery and bringing the recovery back to day dot) the prognosis is good

enough of that back to the car

so the ad was for the car as pictured above minus engine no real biggie was thinking of banging my ute's 308 in it its not hugely quick but is extremely reliable but i thought the 6 could be a goer apparently it was built tough by the guy who built the car with several go fast goodies

rang the seller and threw an offer which he pounced on quicker than a fat kid on chocolate cake (thought to myself Fkn too high again retard)

then hauled it home went to roll it off the trailer and bang brakes are seized on as i was supposed to start a maintenance shutdown at work the next day i rolled it in the shed locked it and went to work

the first 2 days of the shut i had my brother texting me he picked up some triple su carbs and wanted to come down because he was between jobs and wanted to have a crack at it

the next day was the day of the major life crisis i don't remember a lot of details about other things but my brother was down 400km to help out where he could and with his free time he got stuck in with this happening on the first couple of days

the water pump was seized when we picked up the car but the previous owner mentioned that before it happened the car was harder to start than usual and for some reason i wanted to pop the timing cover to have a look at the gears which was a good idea

seeing as the cam had to come out to replace the retaining plate and bolts i grabbed some pics to try to identify it

someone with a speedway torana i know said its this cam but any other info you guys have will help as i know a bit about cams but the numbers on this one don't help me a lot all i know its been reground

well after updating on this my rolercoaster life was on the down wife went back to hospital with a twisted bowel so as of today a month in the hospital also being sent to Perth for specialist treatment but i am back on nightshift which gives me time to update this to where it sits at the moment

    the brakes are pretty standard

any guesses? i know but lets see who else does

also a reply to HK the head is no where near standard its had some hog work and also has a set of Platinum 7/16" Rockers, Ratio 1.65 YT 6371 at nearly a grand of rockers getting the engine and box for nothing was a bonus

got the carbs and threw them on quickly trying to get it ready for a go to whoa in November which i failed the carbs weren't up to scratch more like petrol sprinklers
first fire up was quite surprising and usual for me every time i get the dizzy 180 out

so rebuilt the carbs and bunged them back on and fired it up and it got hot real quick way too lean as its my first time mucking with su carbs its taking a while to get my eye in and with 3 of them it seems to complicate things a bit but i am making improvements as time permits

and the last update to as it sits is i must have left the key on too long while mucking around (maybe 15 min at the most) and now its got no spark i'm thinking the coil has lost it but haven't had a chance to have a look and as its got points i found a bosch electronic dizzy and am going to change it and possibly run a 6al for a little better control

had a play with this a couple of days ago and had a chance to figure a few things out

its definitely a waggot cam the one i highlighted a stage 5 cam i'm feeling quite manly now (someone ring pauly and tell him)

i am having issues with the plugs fouling as i haven't got the tune sorted and the points aren't helping i have been looking at getting some sort of msd box to fire the bosch dissy i got free and need some advice on if it will work on this car

i was thinking of getting a standard 6al with the right coil for it and banging it in but i found the msd ct6 which is made for track cars which i can get from summit for the same price as a 6al through my local https://www.msdperformance.com/produ...ing/parts/6427

the things i like are that i can lock my dissy and use the box to reduce timing on start up
the rev limit is easier to use than the 6al
and lastly the big fat sparks to burn the bang juice pouring in the cylinders

i havent had a lot to do with msd boxes so if anyone has experience with this one or can recommend a better box speak up

i looked at ice ignitions but from what i can tell they don't do a selectable cylinder box as i want to put a v8 in this thing eventually

    the 6ct features:
MSD’s smoothest rev limiter yet! Won’t upset the chassis and easy on parts
Large, easy to read LED display
Simple setup of features such as the rev limiter with three rotary dials on the face of the unit
Built-in Start Retard adjustable in 0⁰, 10⁰ or 20⁰ increments for quick, easy starts and extend starter life
LED displays rev limit, highest RMP turned, cylinder select, start retard, battery voltage and can be set to tach mode
Full delivery of spark energy down to 6 volts battery supply
Highly efficient, low current draw for extended battery life
Fully potted housing to stand up to demanding race conditions
Single plug-in connector for clean wiring
Tamper proof screws to prevent modification of unit
Records highest RPM the engine turned for last 20 minutes of run time
Works on 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines
Reverse polarity and overheat protection provide ultimate reliability

Those brakes look like an old set of Jag 4 spots, pretty popular mod with the circuit racers.

The Waggot 104 is a great cam, I have used it in Holden 6's, 308's and even SBC's before with great results. It is old school but if you are building a lo-tech engine it works well.

I wouldn't bother with the MSD. Send the Dizzy to Performance Ignitions and get them to recurve it to suit that donk, fit and forget !

Best wishes for the family, I hope all goes well and it improves from here.

hi struggler thats a no for jag

i would recurve the dissy but i don't know much about the engines internals with exception to the cam and didn't really want to lift the head at this point

as for the msd i am undecided at the moment just thinking

    Well it lives

through another set of sparkplugs in it my brother assisted with the cranking of the starter and i managed to get it started and tuned to a point where it runs without getting too hot i think i have my head around the su's a bit now all i need is to give it a run and see how it goes

didn't have enough spare time to get the dissy rebuilt and installed so still running the points one at the moment but baby steps
