350 holley on 202 dramas
Hi all i have a 202 with a 12 port head and varajet manifold and 350 holley, problem is after driving for any amount of distance and turning car off on startup a big puff of black smoke comes from exhaust. I know that it is fuel as i have pulled carb from the manifold and seen pool of fuel in the bottom of the manifold. i also know it is not a leaky carb as ive tried a brand new reco one from hume performance with the same issue. Would this be a design flaw of that carb as i've heard they don't atomise fuel very well coupled with the 90 degree transition from carb to combustion chamber, allowing it to sit until the key is turned thus pulling excess fuel in on startup? I'm stumped at this point but it is annoying having the issue when motor runs so strong.

Look down the carb with a torch after a drive, its possible that the needle and seat may not be holding after hot shutdown.

A leaky power valve will give the same symptoms.
While running the valve is shut so no leaking of fuel, when the engine is off, the valve opens, and via the damaged diaphragm dribbles fuel into the manifold, emptying the fuel bowl, causing hard starting and cloud of black smoke at start up.
The damaged diaphragm, while the engine is running, usually does not show up as a problem and the engine drives nice.

IMHO a Holley is a carby you're having when you can't find a carrby...Try and find a Webber off a falcon ol mate as they dead easy to tune and suit a 202 mighty fine.
