    Default Timing AU falcon 4.0 engine after cam replacement, wont bar over by hand

    Gday,

    Anyone have experience timing AU 4.0 engines? Just replaced camshaft, lined up timing marks as per the gregory's manual, tightened rocker gear, removed spark plugs and barred engine by hand... gets tight in a couple of spots, like its building compression, then at about 150 deg or so rotation it almost locks up and i dont really want to bar any harder without knowing this is normal. Surely the valve springs aren't this tight.

    FYI: this is an engine I bought from the wreckers, supposedly running, i have it on a stand, barring it with bolts in the back of the crank and a pry bar about 800mm long, one hand barring, the other hand holding the timing chain guide in place.... to give you perspective.

    Thought Id save some money and replace the engine in my daily sh#t box... probably a bad idea .

    Im thinking I'm just being over-cautious here... I'm sure these valve springs will be tighter that the ole 202's and SBC's I'm used to.

    you didnt mix up the little caps that hold the cam in did you?

    Is it a 1 piece style or indivdual blocks like a Barra 6?

    Not familiar with the barra cams either, but the only thing I can see holding the cam in place is spring pressure through the rocker arms. I was surprised it didn't even have cam bearings. Nothing came apart... just swapped cam and rocker gear from my old engine engine to the new wreckers engine, as the wreckers engine had rust eating into the cams hard facing lol.

    The more and more I think about it I'm just over-reacting over nothing.

    All intake valves were sticking. Installed engine, had no start, found zero compression in all cylinders! Ripped off cover and rocker gear... small tap on the valves with a plastic hammer proved it. Bloody wreckers engines!

    Thinking about rebuilding myself now. Rebuild kits look cheap enough.
