Default looking for a Big Block Chev

hey all, I am on the lookout for a big block chev for the coupe. any size is okay, as I can set it up and then change to a bigger combo later. just need something that will work to a minimal budget

if you can keep a lookout that would be great.

Thanks
Ash.

whats the budget? Les might be offloading his old one from the Chevelle if he sticks with the current engine in it.

Try the parts peddler too theres heaps of importers in there with a bundle of different big block options ranging from a 2bolt bolts to all the eagle range personally I would be getting one of the cheaper rebuilable ones (most have warranties) I think they start around the 2200-2500 (free freight on most too) and rebuild it to suit your specs besides while its not in the car it ll make a damn fine addition in your shed if you manage to find to the room :P hahaha.

Really depends on where you want to start are you looking for a race ready drop it in and away you go or build it up and get there as time and money allows it?

okay, looked into the 366T:
- T stands for tall dack. they have a 10.2 inch deck height
- 3.935 inch bore (small eh)
- 3.76 inch stroke
the one advertised on ebay is a genV model built from 91-95, and has a 1 poece main seal.

I looked on a US forum, they reckon it can only be bored 60 thou, and they are not suited to performance applications. and apparently make good boat anchors.
anybody else know anything about these motors?
(will post on my other thread too)

As you said, the 366T is a Tall Deck block.

-It won't fit as happily into your HQ as the heads will be higher and wider bringing them closer to the power booster and everything
-Off the shelf headers won't fit either because of the extra width and will probably hit on the frame rails.
-Block won't take mechanical fuel pump.
-It is 4-bolt main forged steel crank, but is one piece rear main meaning you're stuck with the flexplate that's on it (unless you adapt a Mark IV). No-one makes a flexplate/flywheel for one-piece rear main that is internally balanced to my knowledge.
-Pretty sure it has the peanut-port (small-port) heads with non-adjustable valve-train that are also non-interchangeable with the Mark-IV head.
-Won't take aftermarket manifold (picture appears to be 2bbl) without spacers to adapt to the tall-deck spacing.
-Same 3.76" stroke as 396-427 and same length rod, with the deck height difference being made up by a taller, 4-ring piston which is obviously heavier bringing the RPM capabilities down. Aftermarket pistons are limited (I can't even find a listing for them).
-It has very thick cylinder walls and can be bored .125", but as I said the pistons are impossible to get and would be super-heavy anyways. Doesn't matter as to the boring anyway, 'cause it starts at 366 anyway and would never make it to 454, which you can buy real easy and cheap.

Tall Deck blocks are mostly used in speedboats where there aren't any clearance problems and pistons are customized (I think) to suit supercharging and the like.

This engine appears to be a real orphan - in other words, make it all easy on yourself and stick with Mark IV 396-454 as parts/interchangeability and support are much easier, cheaper and more plentiful. Plus it'll go better too!

Forgot to mention: When you're shopping for a Mark IV make sure you get the short-deck passenger car block with a minimum of large oval-port heads. Watch out for the peanut-port heads as some short-deck blocks had them on. An easy way to identify a short-deck passenger car block when you're shopping is to look at the water pump top mounting bolts. The holes on the passenger block are no more than 3/16ths of a inch below the deck surface, whereas the tall-deck blocks have an additional .4".

are you sure you want to go down this road?? seems to me the fashion nowadays is to stroke a smaller block & still run the low numbers, cranks weigh less, rods & pistons weigh less & are abundent to buy, blocks weigh less etc etc
Iv all my life been a big block believer but nowdays Im not so 100% certain
