Default Wodonga Autofest

NEWSLINK

August 31, 2007

WODONGA TURNING
INTO A CAR MECCA
WODONGA has secured its second annual car event this month, with Autofest organisers locking in the Wodonga Racing Club site for next year’s event.

The event will be known as the Wodonga Autofest and will be held on February 23 and 24, 2008.

This is just one month before the southern hemisphere’s biggest annual Chrysler expo — Chryslers On The Murray — to be held at the Gateway Lakes precinct in Wodonga from March 14 to 16, 2008.

The Springnats Autofest has been running in Shepparton for 15 years and was held for the first time in Murray Bridge, South Australia and Albury in 2007.

Wodonga has been chosen as the preferred site with the inaugural event expected to attract crowds of between 15,000 and 20,000 people.

Wodonga Mayor Rodney Wangman said the two events combined would attract thousands of visitors to our great city.

“Wodonga has the ability to put on large-scale events such as these, and we hope to build long lasting relationships with the organisers,” he said.

“It is great news for local businesses especially accommodation providers as many interstate people are expected to make the trek, no doubt with their cars in tow.”

Autofest is all about admiring the best cars in the land and spending quality time with family and friends, while witnessing some of the most powerful cars compete side by side in events such as:
  • Go To Whoa – fast pace action of timed vehicles competing over 140 metres who are required to stoop on a designated point;
  • Motorkana – fast paced obstacle course action, set against the clock;
  • Show N Shine – competitors show their restoration expertise and beauty of their cars;
  • Dyno Challenge – see cars go through their gears in a stationary position on the dyno machine; and
  • Cruise Track – open for competitors to cruise slowly around the site to show off their vehicles.

Organiser Les Adams said they were looking for a more picturesque venue with more amenities, and the racecourse stood out as the ideal venue.

“We hope our relationship with Wodonga Council will be a long-term partnership,” he said.

“We have secured the racecourse for 2008 and 2009.

“Autofest is a car festival especially for modified cars, but restored and original cars are also welcome and catered for.”

Mr Adams said a highlight of the event would be the fiercely competitive Burnout Title.

“We usually get anywhere between 50 to 100 entrants for it,” he said.

Council will spend around $18,000 to stage the event, with the annual economic benefit being between $10 to $15 million per year.

Wodonga Autofest will be promoted nationwide in 10 Australasian car magazines, the Trading Post, and regional television and radio.
