What is the best way to set up a heat exchange system. I have only seen a couple of them and both were completly different. I am considering putting one on as I do occassionaly run the boat in salt water.
Using the standard auto water pump for the closed circuit part seems to be common. Can the flexi vane pumps (jabsco, argo ect) be used for this or will the heat damage the impellors? Do you run a thermostate in them? What size pump for the open circuit side 1/2" or 3/4"? how much flow is required through the heat exchanger. A couple of pictures of the setup would be great.

hey, are you going to run closed circuit or mercruiser type set up? ( boat picks up river water and puts that thru a core that cools the engines water? )
im running complete closed circuit in mine with an alloy radiator under rear deck. just running au thermos so should work ok for my engine. i think the mercruiser set ups are good and reliable. i think they run a thermostate which would suit where u live. try ringing kincaid marine in somerton and they will help you out

Have not had anything to do with the heat exchanger system before so just looking for ideas. The only reason I am contemplating putting one in is I live about 2 minutes from the local boat ramp to drop it in Morton Bay (salt water) and dont want to run salt water through it with an open circuit cooling system. It would be good to be able to drop it in the bay on a lazy sunday.
Dont want a radiator nowhere to put it. Just a heat exchanger and small header tank. But even that I am not sure will fit under the engine cowling. So basically just getting ideas so I know what I need to do it. And then if something comes along a the right $ I might do it. When I spoke with the marine places they were talking $2000-2500 to do it. I am not prepared to pay that sort of dollars. I have seen a couple go on fleabay for around the $600. That is heat exchanger with header tank. Any info on brands, sizes & ratings would be good as well as anything else I would need to know???

i got a mate who made one from a smal radiator. wrapped it with sheet metal, put some fittings into it then just picked up salt water to push thru it. fresh water in the engine and salt thru the exchanger. good thing about a radiator is ya can lay them down in the hull so they take up hardly any room. just finding one with the right hose directions etc would be hard i guess.
my mate did his for cheap and it does work realy well
