    Default 383 cam/rocker advice

gday guys ive got my bottom end started and im after advice on cam and rockers. my block is a 010 350 4 bolt i have a scat 4340 standard weight 383 crank scat 6.00 Hbeams and srs forged flat tops. arp head studs double hump fuelies 202 160 double springs i think 600 lift before bind. i still have to measure chamber and port sizes. im thinking of running a solid cam and maybe roller rockers/lifters is that overkill? any ideas on camshaft selection id like a fairly lumpy idle but not catch the gear stick . its a tow car so im mainly after torque id be happy with 350/375hp and 400ftlb. it has a vn t700 with stock convertor and 3.55 10 bolt 295/50/15 cheers joe

    Default yeah why not!

i would be going the rollers 1.6-1 ratio.

its gunna free up a few hp and less drag on your valve train.
maybe a camshaft in th 228@.050 degrees area not to big so its gunna keep your torque up. maybe in the 106-108 lsa only because its for towing keep it happening down lowish in the rev range should work well. Somthing like below crane cam hydraulic

Mate, you dont really need a solid for this you can easily make 375HP and 440 lbs/ft of TQ and you wont have to spin it much past 5000RPM ...

CAMTECH CAMS - Performance You Can Feel. High Performance Camshafts. Regrinds, Lifters

Use camtech part no: CT 1 543 (a) Some nice yella terra adjustable 1.6:1 rockers will add reliability, but arent 'really' necessary ...

cheers i understand that roller rockers are overkill but i just want it to be strong and reliable this time. do you think the rollers will fit under my tappet covers ?

If they are the same as the ones in the picture, then YES ...

What car is the 383 for and what are you gonna tow??

You can get the Yella Terra 'Street Terra' cast style rockers to save a few bucks, but even if you run hydraulic get the adjustable type ...

gday again a mate of mine has a set of shaft mounted procomp roller rockers (came with his procomp heads and he has never used them) i can get them for $150 are they any good? would they suit my my needs? i noticed just playing with them on the table theres a bit of side rock between the arm and shaft. but under load that would not happen? he said he thought they were 1.6 ratio but the ads on ebay say there 1.5 is there a way to measure to be sure? cheers joe

Use Yella Terra... Hate to have needle rollers and bits of rocker all thru your new engine.

I did use yella terra roller rockers, and I did get the needle rollers throughout the engine. Geometry was excellent. Camshaft was not large, 215@.050.

I now only use comp cams hi-techs. 1.6:1 is available, and recomended.

for the idle you want, check out the "thumpr" camshafts from comp cams. Its gonna be tough to get that awesome sound, and still maintain a reasonable amount of torque. probably a 283thr7. It will be a compromise, but I understand why you want the sound, but because it's a stroker, you gotta go a fair bit bigger to get the equivalent "rumpata" to a 350.

I would also lose that Victor Jr. looking manifold, and get an Edelbrock performer RPM AirGap. (must be the RPM AirGap)

I cannot tell what carb you have, but Annular boosters on an 850 odd cfm carby should be dynamite.

Also, exhaust is not mentioned.... inch and 7/8 tri-y's with a 18-24 inch secondary extension would go a long way to helping too. And obviously a twin 3 inch system with x-pipe, and hi-flow mufflers...

Make sure to get your dizzy re-graphed too. You will probably want a few more degrees down low, with a little more camshaft. It will help your real low end torque.

Mega tough lookin' tunna too dude. Be a weapon with the 3.55's and the th700. BTW, you can put a pretty big convertor in it, and coz it's a locking auto, you don't sacrifice fuel economy!!!

Gday guys thanks for the input but all the parts have been ordered. Graeme Frawley (the drag car guy) is doing the machining and assembly on my new motor. we sat down with his crow program on his pc and with all the combo i have he came up with crow adjustable 1.6 roller rockers and a crow cam thats 217/224 duration and 4.60 @ 50 lift. (4.90 with 1.6 rollers) which should give me 350hp and 420lb/ft at 5200 (cam starts at 1200) ive ordered a ice ignition and i might get a 750 double pump?. to replace the 600vac im gonna try the combo i have first. im going in thurs to watch them balance the crank and do the dummy assembly ?whats wrong with the victor jnr? cheers joe
