Default Tow cars? What is best?

    Hello all.

I am keen to purchase a decent tow car/daily when my HK wagon is finished and sold off. I reckon my budget will be around $10k. What do you reckon will suit my needs? I am thinking a Nissan Patrol 4WD. They are reasonably priced and will tow all day long. Diesel? Duel Fuel petrol? Let me know your opinions? I am not biased when it comes to daily's, what ever works I suppose.

Oh yeah, I tow my 1600kg HG Prem, with a tandem that weighs around 5-6-700kg.

Are you just towing your car? I'd assume car and trailer would be about 2 tonne which isn't out of reach of you average v8 sedan. Cheaper to run/fix and more comfy. Spend a few bucks on suspension and you're fixed but triple check weights first or transport will deliver you a new poo hole.

The idea is to have the tow car heavier than your race/street car and tralier combined.

As i value my car , trailer and life i will not tow with anything not suitable for the job.

Ive known a fews car lost by silly towing setups and will not risk it.

I have a got a 1989 Nissan GQ Patrol LWB , full chassis heavy and tuff.

End of the day its up to you.

    Cheers

If you go turbo diesel or diesel, fuel economy doesn't get knocked about as much as petrol, far better for towing and heavy loads.
80 series landcruiser turbo Diesel you will find for under 10k
The heavier the tow car the safer you'll be

My "thrasher/tow car/i dont care car" is an 85 HJ60 cruiser, dual fuel with a 350 chev.

It was a bit rough but it does everything that I need it to do. Paid $5500 for it fully engineered & licensed for the 8 and gas, had it for about 4 or 5 years now and spent maybe 500 on it since i got it.

    Mark, Turbo Diesel GQ Patrol.
Or, Victorian American Imports have some nice tow cars, might be a little over the budget though.

Don't even bother with a 60 series for your price!!

I agree with buying a solid chassied 4wd with the weight to tow.

You will get a fairly good diesel 80 series Cruiser or GU Patrol for that money!

After all, a commodore would do it but not legally! A petrol 4WD would do it but not cheaply! A diesel 4WD will do it perfectly

i jackknifed a car trailer years ago.
was towing a plymouth fury on a trailer with a vg valiant hardtop doin about 80k's down a straight section of road.
    got real ugly real fast.

watever you choose make sure its heavier than wat your towing..

After speaking with a few blokes and reading what you guys have said, I think I will keep my eye on turbo diesel 80 series Landcruisers.

    Hey Mark
if your looking at 80 series just stay away from the first of them pre 1993,
the first ones had shit brakes and the 3rd gear syncro is a problem in them

anything 93 onwards you cant go wrong

If you wanna get anywhere offroad then buy a patrol, if you wanna pay for a badge then buy a cruiser. Just stear clear of the 3.0L turbo diesel patrols and you'll be fine, 4.2 deisel or turbo deisel are the go.
