    Default efi hk prem

    gday boyz n girls........
ive been inspired by lx406 in his thread and his prem build.
im fairly new to v8 so might take me a bit a messin round to get pix up.
but ive at least got plenty to talk about and lots of questions i need answering....and like wise ill enjoy answering any too.

    ok........(big breath) here it goes.....

    phils 1968 hk premier

i bought the car about 18 months ago, and for me it was like the ol classic in the chook shed dream that im sure we all wake from sometimes!
it was just a roller, with a few bits and pieces. (needed donor car)
the history is sketchy...... and sadly many of the facts went with the guy that i was in the process of buying the car from. (rip heath)

the little i know tells me that.....
1968 hk prem (no plates or rego details) im doin everything motor reg tells me too. stat dec, all receipts from my build and ill be ok.
most likely was a six from factory
hasnt been on road sinse 1982
previous owner was engineer (who knows what kind??)
gts bits must have been cheap back then!!

whats been done when i got it.....
    ok was a roller.......bare roller.....
im a restorer... so i reconised that its been blasted and most likely on a rotissery.
under carridge.......is amazing, in that.... i dont have to do a thing. (except redo were the mini tubs are)
hes done the work i was dreading when i was looking for a suitable car.
strip, stone guard and black 2pac every corner or the under side
EVERY NUT, BOLT, BRACKET, STEERING ARMS and anything else he could it seems, was cad plated.(sort of goldy colour)
    shortened 9inch
    rebuilt front end
    16.7/1 steering box
    bathurst tank
    new brakes front and back
body was completly stripped, and has ZERO body filler.
    red oxide coating for storage
all panels pretty good, good style lines and the gaps are divine!!
only rust ive located are in the usual places..... but only hanging panels....guards and doors. and theyve been blasted since.
BODY HASNT SEEN A SPOT OF WATER FOR 25 YEARS.....

i know its like a dream....

bit o bad news tho, was that the mint parts that previous owner had stored in his attic, (which i was negotiating with him when he sadly pasted) are in the family home, and ive been finding it very hard to get these bits. 18 months later... plenty of communication with the family later..... and still no bits. how do you ask mourning family for car parts of a lost one........
let alone consider the trauma that it may cause. very tricky. ive been patient...very patient, but seem to cause stress when i ring and ask about it and feel now like im hastling them. it makes me sad on many levels.

    anyway........
next post ill talk bit more bout me and my role....

    Default efihkprem

    .........and so the story continues...
the big plan that i had was to do the ls1/2 convertion.
i wanted good drivabilty, good power, all the stuff that comes with a late model fuel injected engine.
to add to this i saw the power levels achieved by such setups as the aps tt ls1, hpf and their crazy stuff and seeing and hearing (dudes and dudettes....seeing is believing...) the awsome the tt gen3 drift car at a.i.r......everything i could ever need in an engine bay (except a quaility coffee machine!)
    BUT THEN
i started pricing up.....(these prices were approx and variable)
and at the time, ls1 and 6speed around $7000
tt set up and tuning around $16k
(that was quotes based on commodore applications and my hk would have needed further custom fabrication which i didnt even bother pricing)
the only kit for fitting an ls1 into hktg was one that i reckon would have worked but was around $5500
(id rather spend that money on a custom front crossmember..... run power rack and pinnion.... run massive brakes......air bags......money much better spent. rod tech seems to be the man in that area.)
THEN.....pay someone to fit it all.... and make it work......
    i reckon a safe $2000
and say an emergency $1000 for whatever.......(beer....sshhhh)lol
$31500......and with that the philstreetbank comes crashing down!!!
and i could sit in a rolling shell with 32k running gear!
even if you take out the tt set up its around 15k for a stocker......nice cruizer yes, but no strip monster.
so after exhaustive reasearch about it all..... i decided..back to school.....yeolskool.
it had engine mounts for sbc
floor had been modified for th400...
    so i started shopping.....

i had decided that i would look for a second hand engine.... one with all the good stuff, low kms and i was ready to pay for somthing worthy.
an engine someone had spent the time and money on but were selling to fund their new big block or somethin like that!
AND THEN I RECKON I HIT THE JACKPOT.....
on ebay short description and a phone number.
i talked to the guy a few times, and did a bit of checkin up on the engine and him. good engine number. 036 block mexican build (apperently they have bigger water jackets???!!!) 4 bolt, stroker crank, racer pro heads. and he turns out to be the main man at torquepower.com and a veteren speedway engine builder with a long list of teams that were using his engines..... ok so he knows how to screw engines together.
funny thing is the engine came out of his hq ute, which is now waiting for a big block!!!
one well all hear much more about im sure. big block holden engine!!
    THE BIG PAW
he re designed a block based on holden design but can take aftermarket chev components.....up to 500ci........lx500ci on the street!!!!!!imagine.
i think street machine are doin an article soon on the ute.
word has it that if i went to build this engine now i wouldnt get much change from 20k.everything was new except block.
only done 1000kms 2 dyno runs and a few quarters in the ute.
(quarters were done before the alloy heads were put on)....
    12.00 @116mph and they estimated 440hp
we got 516hp 483tq with the alloy heads and 750dp

    ok question time.....
the 9inch in the hk is 1460 in length.
and ive been told it has to min. 1520-1560 to avoid engineers report.
but ive also been told that if i run with the 1460 housing i will need to go
    full floating rear end.
anyone know much about this stuff.....associated costs
    pros and cons
ive got another housing standard length as back up also, but ill have to rebuild it where as the 1460 is ready to roll.

    cheers

ok.... so ive just moved into a new place with a nice big shed for me to fiddle in.
engines now at home on a stand....nice and clean, ready for me to paint, and ive been shopping......
picked up a th400 that was built a year ago by bruce coussins in adelaide. the guy i bought it off had never used it... so to me might aswell be new!
    blue printed
    heavy duty sprag and clutch
tci full manual valve body, stage3, reverse pattern.
    also got....
    b&m pro ratchet, and a
    massive cooler (40,000btu)
    BUT.......
    a big one......
my most impressive purchase of the month is for sure.......fuel injection.
after not going with the ls1 idea, to find what ive found is a godsend. because ill be getting all the benefits of fuel injection, like the ls1 but with much bigger power!!
so..... i snapped it up in a jiffy, and have fitted the manifold to the engine.......or tried, gotta mill it to fit...apparently not a biggy!

now, bill hanson@bill hanson engine developments, the nice gent wholl be re dynoing the engine with the injection has informed me that its possible to loose peak hp but may pick up low down tq figures, not to mention the throttle response of this kinda setup.
this is what i got for my money......
    moon quad twin manifold
    8, 48mm throttle bodies
    bosch 90hp injectors
    billet fuel rails
    kinsler trumpets (small)
motec ecu, hand contoller and loom
bosch motorsport pump 044, and filter
    accel dizzy.........
hopefully the prem will go ok!!!

    with joy comes pain...........
    great..... fuel injection.....
no so great.........having to totally upgrade fuel system
very bad.........cut hole in bathurst tank to feed swirl pot for efi....

thats the delemma for the week......

heres a pic of the undercarridge as i got it.
stone guard and 2pac...... makin my job a heap easier. and a pleasure to work with.... no road grime at all. even when the car was on the road, it was only till the early 80s been blasted since then. the original speedo says 32000miles...

scat crank and rods, arp bolts....
    all balanced of course.
    i beam rods
9000series crank. now i had heard mixed reports bout these cranks, some
from salesmen tryin the upsell, others from people speculating on forums..
.....the ol mate of mine type stories...
but when i spoke to mr torque-power.com (who built the engine) he said something along the lines of........
blokes regrind old cranks and run massive power and revs, so whats a brand new crank made from high quality metals, machined on state of the art equipment, using the latest technology and techniques going to manage???
    point taken i reckon.
i dont think someone whos built so many engines over so many years would take risks on inferior parts.
    so id say.... not inferior.
but ill let yall know how its goin after 100k kms and 1000 quarters!!ha (not really)
also got a shot into the pistons. forged probe items, great if i ever go for gas!!
