Hi all. I am rebuilding a HJ one tonner at the moment and have heard of and seen a couple with the rear cabin wall flatend off. I know that it is allowed as that section is not "structual" but has anyone done it? I have seen one ute on cardomain with it. How would you go about it?

I imagine the best way would be to simply cover the ribs with flat steel. Makes it very easy, and the ribs will keep the strength in the panel so it doesn't bend and warp if you hit it too hard or get it a bit hot welding it in. I've replaced the rear panel in a ute before and the most difficult part was getting it straight at the window lip, which you wouldn't have to worry about either if you just put a panel on top.

Sorry I didnt explain myself properly. The rear cab comes in from under the window on about a 45 degree angle, then comes back out. What I would like to do is put a flat piece straight down from the window then fold it and come into where it would normally meet. Essentially giving you a parcel shelf, or room to lay the seats back, or room for stereo, etc.

I am going to be doing this mod soon.
One of my mates has a tank building business and he is folding up a new section now. I have asked him to put in a cross or X crease across the middle of the flat section of steel for strength. Then across the lower section of the panel I am going to weld a piece of 10mm box tube for one side of the car to the other for added strength and to get a decent weld down. When I pick up the panel I will post a pic here for you. Keep your eyes on my build up if you can wait a bit.

I have been keeping an eye on your build. Its looking awesome. I have actually stripped mine right down to the chassis. Cab is off to the sandblaster next week and im thinking ill send the chassis in too, seeing as though its already off

I thought of doing a full cab off rebuild but the Tonner only is going to be a work hack. It not worth all the extra work.
You might as well get the chassis done if the cab is off; I would then get it and the suspension powder coated if you want to fully strip it.

i've just done my hq well back cab the same as what your wanting to do. i had to make two peices one was shaped to the floor tray and folded over the inside of the bottom of the cut made on the inner cab, the tray side that was shaped to the floor then had a 2inch overlap for the top section that was folded to the top of the cab. very frustrating but it works great should be easy to fit into a tonner cab, all one peice i'd imagine

ive done the conversion years ago it not that hard the only problem i had was that the panel flexed a bit over time im about to start another project now and with a bit more paitence im going to do it again last time i welded a bit of 25mm angle at the hight that i wanted the shelf to be then got some panel steel bent up in one piece wasnt to hard this time i will brace the panel by adding a couple of ribs inside of the panel so i dont have to worry about the flex issue my last tonna had a blown small block in it this one will hopfully have a ls1 or something im picking it up today and will post some photos soon
does anyone have a hz statesman grill upper and lower |

I,ve just done this mod on a tonner that i,m painting for a bloke, only i chose to leave the spotwelded lip around the edge( helps as a lip to stop stuff sliding out anyway) , I just stitch welded the panel in and applied some drip chek to neaten it up.
