Default Stupid Stereo

hey guys, wonder if you can help me out with this one, coz it has me stumped..

just recently i put in an amp and subwoofer to my VB commodore. Everything went fine, it works and sounds great. In the last couple of weeks i have noticed that the subwoofer cuts in and out. It will cut out when i put my foot down on the accel pedal, and when i slow down again, it comes back..if im cruising along and high speed for long enough, it will come back again.. i drive a lot and if i have been driving that car around for a while, it stops cutting in and out.

I have checked the connections, its not a loose connection, so its got me stuffed what is going on.

Any Ideas???

how big an amp and sub you got, i had the same problem because the little altenator in the early 6cyl commodores does stuff all! i ended up using a 125 amp vr v8 altenator and when i was testing the 2 15inch subs out in the shop the stereo was twice as loud as before at its best and the head lights were twice as bright 2 scared the hell out of the asians in the shop getting a new battery lol! or the battery might be old and not keeping that bit you need for the stereo to run flat out but the car still will start! i still think it would be the altenator, turn the steroe up and check how many amps the altenator is charging at should be around 14

since it cuts out when ya put ya foot down it must be moving. does it just go silent or does it crackle and make all sorts of noises. There may be a wire inside the sub box that is loose. turn the tunes on and shake ya sub then shake the amp if that doesn't show where the problem is you've got me stumped too. unless ya battery is loose. try wiggle the battery leads. an intermittent fault like that is 90% a loose connection somewhere.

well, im almost 110% sure its not something loose, coz today i had it in the driveway, and i put my foot down, in park and it still cuts out. It cuts out, dead to nothing, no crackle or noise, just no sub at all, the rest of the stero still works, and then it comes back the same.

its not a big setup at all, one small sub, and small amp

i was thinking the alternator, is it any trouble getting the VR/S V8 one on??

that might be worth a go, as well as a new battery, it must be a power issue i think

and also, the earth maybe no good, are you talking about the batter earth or the sub earth??

definately an odd one mate. Get someone else to stomp on the acc pedal while you look at the amp and see if there is an overload light. ya may be putting to high of a voltage in it, could be ya voltage regulator. If not give the altinator a go but I'd try the cheap stuff 1st.

P.S, if anyone can tell me if there is any real issues with getting the VR alt in, that would be appreciated as well.

Same bloody thing with my brothers VR Commy, today we want down to the motorshow, we were driving round town for a bit, gettin petrol and bank ect.. and the two rear speakers were doing the same thing, they are powerd by a 4ch pioneer amp, the other two chanels are on the subs and they are fine. abut anyhow, by the time we got 15k down the highway the speakers were right again. stupid as!

well, i had thought about these sort of things, and i could very easily be wrong, but i cant find anything like that, and it still happens when im in the driveway, not moving.. only when the car is being revved. and if i am moving and i put my foot on the brakes, it comes back on...but its not heavy stopping or going, it can be cruising up the st at 50Km/hr

ok, i think i may have found pieces to this puzzle.

today (its raining in melbourne) i had the wipers on, and when i was on the accel pedal, the wipers would go faster, the times at which they would change speed are the same as the moments when the subwoofer would die (i have it turned down now coz its so annoying)

i also noticed very softly, the battery light is coming on. oh and the other night my headlights died out, but i dont know if that has anything to do with it, its probably just a fuse or something

so im wondering if maybe there is a connection between all this, its almost like there is too much power to the amp, or maybe the battery or alt is just stuffed

in theory (wich is not alwayse correct) when your battery starts to die it sulphates wich increases it's internal resistance. This should increase the current flow from the altinator to the battery but if the battery cannot accept the extra current then it will dicipate thru the cars circuit hence giving the faster wiper speed.

since P=V/I, P being power, V being voltage and I being current. The "power" of your altinator is constant so as the current increases the voltage must drop.

put a multimeter across your battery and see if the voltage drops. if it does you need a new battery. the voltage drop also explains ya sub dropping out.

that's way too bloody technical for this time of morning.

hope it helps. If I'm right 6 pack of bundy's to me
