hey mate,Alpine make a nice little 4" package, they usually get put into the vn's where they have speakers mounted on the dash.what you can do,use the room where the 4" speakers go for the tweeters, buy a set of 6" fronts, pioneer make good front speakers, for a budget of course,if you are planning on having subwoofers, buy a set of 6" speakers again, but mount them in the doors, you'll lose sound quality if you mount them on the parcel shelf where they are open to bass from the subs (distortion ahoy!!)
just bargain around on ebay if you are at boarding school, they have good deals there.
Alpine Type R 6 1/2" for the rears.(may need a spacer for these cause of them having a large magnet)
Pioneer 220watt fronts i can't remember the model # but i have them in my statesman, and they give good quality for what i payed for them.
get a 2nd hand deck, with 1 pre out,pre outs are nothing to worry about untill you wanna run 3+ amps.
Get a cheap alpine 2nd hand 2/3/4 channel amp,alpines amps have been good throughout,and a alpine 700watt mono amp.and a alpine type s or type r sub,preferably a new one with a warranty
Because you have 2 amps, you will need to piggy back one to the other, piggy back the 4 channel to the mono, not visa versa.
Talk to your local audio shop about piggy backing amplifiers, its just power x power, earth x earth to the amps
im a young gun myself so i hope i speak your language ahaha.
Hope i helped you out.
Regards
Scott

Yeah thanks for the tips. I will be getting Fusion products:
2x4 inch speakers for the front
2x6 inch speakers for the back
2x6'9 inch speakers for the shelf
1x 400w subwoofers and monoblock amp
1x 400w amps
All encounter series if you know what I mean. Will this fit because i dont wanna have to make more holes in the door or anything. So what's it have stock.?
Thanks

Yeah thanks for that. But do you know if there is a set of 6 inch or 5.25 inch in the back doors when the VH is stock

make sure the 4" fronts are splits with tweeters, you'll love having the tweeters trust me,they add a whole new range of sound,i love mine to bits!

The vh never came stock with door speakers i don't think, you take the door trim out,cut a hole, cut a hole in the inner door itself, and mount a spacer if need be,also talk to your parents if they are handy with fibreglassing, buy a carpeted door pod,rip the carpet off and fibreglass a handy little mould around that, then match some fabric to the same colour as ya door trim and should look neat.

Only the SLE's came with a 4" front dash speakers. all other models had a 4x5 oval speaker in teh centre and one 6" rear speaker.

If SLE then factory would be 4" up front and 6" at rear. The 4" spots dont hold a huge depth. I have got pioneers in there before at a sqeeze and the older alpines as well. Most other speaker do not fit. If mounting speakers on teh door it is better to box them or use a VP onwards speaker pod. Do not hack the inner door as this will reduce the structure of teh door (can be a RW item) as this forms part of the safety barrier. Door do not have a huge amount of strength in them anyways so as soon as you look at cutting them you are weakening the structure.

Similarly Do not cut the rear parcel shelf. When I was in business I needed to fix a number of teh large hifi/car stereo jobs after their $70 special installs. These meant that engineering was required to get teh car up to scratch again. I think the cheapest job was $700. Your Best solution is look at a great set of 6 1/2" speakers (only Alpine make a proper 6 1/2" speaker. All other manufacturers actually make teh cover 6 1/2" and teh driver approx 6 1/8".) Forget 6x9" there are cheap and destort the sound due to construction. (yes I did many tests) At the end of teh day do not skimp on the speakers and buy a great head unit. If you cannot afford a top shelf stuff then some of Alpines entry level stuff can be brillant for teh price. For approx $1000 you could have front splits (6 1/2") rears (6 1/2") and a nice HU which will drive the whole lot nicely.

Always turn your stereo off when enteriong a car park and always remove the face if possible. (I know it is a pain to carry around) but seriously the glove box or under the front seats is too easy to grab whilest removing the HU (thief thoughts here).

The Early commodores are hard to secure nicely. If your installer is good they will pot rivet the cradle to teh original dash and get it solid mounted. This does become a little more difficult in teh SLE due to teh way the vents run. (centre). But it has been done many many time before.

If you are looking for cheap equipment then forget the rear and run teh fronts onyl and an amp for teh sub. this will get the best bang for you buck. Any questions I am sure I can expand on..

Cheers

yeah thanks for the avid description oldn64 but I went and saw the car today. Doesn't the front dash have 3 inch speakers and are they the ones on the top of the dash? All I could find were the 6" on the shelf and those 3". I am still wondering where to put my sub as my boot is mostly taken up by the gas tank. I might be able to make a box to fit in the right hand side of the boot with a mnoblock in there as well. Is there enough room under the dash there to put a set of 4" or 5.25" or something of the sought.

I already have decided to go Fusion brand because i am getting a whole kit for about $200, which is encounter monoblock amp, encounter 400w dual amp, 2x 6" 3 way powerplant series, and a encounter 12" sub. I dont know if you know this much about fusion but I have heard they are alright.
Alpine is good and I am looking for a Alpine head unit or Kenwood. I f you know where I can get one cheap it would help. Also if the VH does have 3" speakers what manufacturers make them.

Cheers for the help

4" speakers do fit and I have placed these in there before. What is your budget for your head unit? is there any specific features you require to have within your head unit. Personally I would not install kenwood anything. (very very bad experience, many customer complaints and returns when I had my shop [some 10 years ago now]) I might be able to assist with the Alpine stuff. Give me something to work with...

Cheers

PS some people have placed the speaker in teh kick panels before (which you can just sqeeze a 6" driver in. The 5 1/4 - 5 1/2" drivers do fit alot better though.

i done the kick panel trick on my statesman, its good except i forgot one was there and i kicked the speaker out! hence why they call it a kick panel, and i find your leg muzzles some of the sound, your better going with it in the door i say

yeah definately go in the door, when the speakers are in the kick panels all the sound just bounces up into the dash and nowhere else. have you considered using a pioneer slimline sub, i've seen them on ebay for about $200 buy now

Yeah thanks for that i will look into it but I think the kick panel would be easier to put in though and I dont particularly want to stuff the door but if needs be I will. Will get 4" soon thanks for that. Yeah I am not sure how much for a head unit but it should be around $300 preferably with Ipod plug in but if it doesn't i'll just get a transmitter. How does that sound
