Gday Peoples,
Ive just bought myself some new audio gear for the monaro. Alpine headunit - Ipod interface and front splits. Ive gotto save for the amplifier to run the splits and sub, but i'm going to run the rear speakers off the head unit ( for now... its not a soundoff car!) ANyway the question i had is the use of sound deadeners like dynamat that's been recommended to me by the installer. He reckons it would be worth it using this to deaden my doors to help the front splits to work more effetively. What do you think? I also need to build a box for my sub (15' cerwin vega... 3Cu Ft enclosure recommended for best use) as it is currently cut into teh rear firewall just below the parcel tray.... which is another thing ive gotto build.. gotto make a parcel tray! Can you guys give me any tips on what to use to make the parcel tray ( currently its just the metal tray with no covering), and any other ideas that you think may help! I simply cant afford what it would cost for the audio guys to install it all for me and do all the work! THanks for taking the time to read! Tiny. |

for your parcel shelf you cant go past 18mm MDF.. same stuff they use to make sub boxes. Sound deadening would be a good idea if you are serious about getting good clean sound and would also assist in cancelling out any vibration.

SiLENCE is spot on with MDF,buy a professionally made ported sub woofer box,you will be amazed by how much more bass you will get just by getting a good box.
mount your subbie to one side of the boot,if ure boot is big,it will like act as a sound tunnel and multiply ure bass in the boot.dynamat is a great thing for increasing sound, though make sure ure wiring is good, bad wiring can cause bad sound. there is a lot of different stuff that can help in audio, look into the little extra bits you can buy for decreasing distortion and all that other stuff, when you buy an amp,buy a circuit breaker with it,for safety.

Thanks guys!
I'll definteily be getting a circuit breaker for the amp, I'll look into getting some MDF for the parcel shelf, its a bit of a pain cause of the roll cage, but we'll get there! As for the sub box, i'll see what i can do.. I dont want to take up too much space, and its a big bloody sub! I'll see what i can try and plan to fit in best ![]() Thanks again, if anyone else has any more ideas it would be great! Cheers |

yeah,if u want some good bass from a single sub,get a ported one, though,if you are planning to get another sub, make ure own single box for now and save for a dual box thats ported.

if you want punchy bass, get a ported sub. if you wont drone long lasting heart beat jumping bass. get an inclosed sub box, if the box you buy is to small, mount the sub on the outside of the box facing in then port it.
also in my experience with 15s dont buy a hell expansensive amp as it only turns to distortion. also in regards to a breaker. waste of money. another note, when running your power lines to your amp, which im guessin wull be in your boot, i hate to tell you but you have to run teh power down one side of the car and the speaker wires down the other, most people think it woint make a differnece, but with 15s it does due to the sound wavelenghts. also i would recco 6" coponentry (fusion perfer) with 6 x9 or 7 x 10 (pioneer) in boxes on the parcel shelf. this is hte best entry level combo. dosnt sound like much on paper. but the sound you will get once you sort your tuning out will be unbeleiveable. let me know if you dont wanna go ahead with the 15 mate and i will draw you up a system to suit your budget. i use to run componentry you would swear i had a sub on, but i didnt, with a 15 its all noise, dont expect clarity, but who needs it anyway! let me know if you need more help

Tiny. Why bother with a stereo when youve got an engine that sounds like that dude.
![]() Seriously I wouldnt go 6 X 9's in the rear if you intend on running a sub as well. 4" or 5" splits in the front. 6" 2 ways in the parcel shelf off the head unit and a 15 off a seperate amp will be ample in my opinion. Theres really so many diffrent combinations that can be done. It all comes down to $$$ bit like an engine rebuild ![]() Cheers

the reason i suggested 6 x 9's is because you wouldnt here the 2 ways in the rear, not to mention you need to direct the sound as the glass will absorb most of it.
i also forgot to mention you will need to run the 6 x 9 off an amp on High pass or other wise they would be useless. my bad. cheers simon.

Yer spot on uted. Running the rears on high pass through an amp would be choice.
So many ways to wire up a stero system its not funny hey. Combinations are endless. Some sound great, some sound shithouse. 400cubes at 6 grand!! That would be my stereo Tiny ![]() Cheers

Thanks for the replies Guys!
I ended up buying 6-1/4" Splits to go in the front doors, and i'm yet to figure out if they will fit or not! that's going to be my major dilemma i think. I'm going to look into a ported enclosure for the 15" sub ive got.. Id rather keep that than change it if i can... Dont want to spend more if i dont need to! For the rears ive been told that a simple pair of 6" 2 ways would be enough for rear fill.. Im definitely not keen on 6x9s or anything in the back. 86 Berlina: The only reason i doof at all is i need something to listen to when the engine is off! ![]() Thanks againb for your input guys.. This wont happen for a few months now but we'll get there! Cheers. |

([quote=getuted]if you want punchy bass, get a ported sub. if you wont drone long lasting heart beat jumping bass. get an inclosed sub box, if the box you buy is to small, mount the sub on the outside of the box facing in then port it.)
a sub doesnt care whether its mounted cone in or out either way it still pushes the same amount of air so if enclosure is too small its just plain to small another point to note is that a sealed sub box will generally be the smallest you can build a ported box is larger.( also need to add you just cant port a box u need to know the correct dimensions for the port otherwise fried sub city) (also in my experience with 15s dont buy a hell expansensive amp as it only turns to distortion. also in regards to a breaker. waste of money.) buy an amp that atleast meets or exceeds the subs specified rating if you buy a smaller amp the sub will clip firstly leading to distortion then onto fried voice coil gernerally it has been known the cheapers ones distort the quickest just remember distortion = clipping = fried sub (another note, when running your power lines to your amp, which im guessin wull be in your boot, i hate to tell you but you have to run teh power down one side of the car and the speaker wires down the other, most people think it woint make a differnece, but with 15s it does due to the sound wavelenghts.) ok never heard of the whole 15s and wave length one but as a rule of thumb run your amp's power wires down one side off the car and the low level inputs ( rca's ) down the other side of the car regadless of speaker's if you run them together you will possibly introduce electrical noise into the sound system. i also run a single 15 in a sealed 3cuft enclosure and it makes nice tight bass have seen 137db at an amatuer sound off. they can and do make some nice bass if set up properly cheers jerome Last edited by v8tfcorty; 10-02-2006 at 09:16 PM. |
