Default Trailer question

I know this isnt really about anything car related but ill ask anyway.

Im planning on buying a small trailer soon, i want a cage trailer, (6 x 4 or thereabouts), but if i get a standard trailer, can i put a cage on it myself (it will be done properly if thats the case) or do i have to get somebody qualified to do it? And will it have to be engineered or roadworthied or something like that?

No problems with adding the cage. With a small 6 x 4 trailer there are exceptions to the unregistered rule in Victoria. They must be less than 200kg unladen, not more than 3 metres from the end of the coupling to the rear or any load carried and not wider than the towing vehicle. It's fairly restrictive especially if you have something hanging out the back. Then legally it's supposed to be registered. For about (I think) $31 a year you can register it. Most trailers these days have a VIN number or plate. If you get a weighbridge certificate and it's roadworthy (you don't actually need one just everything working and good tyres etc) get it registered. That way you're covered. Once it's registered add the cage. It may exceed the 200kg unladen but then again you could be taking the cage home couldn't you. It's not necessarily part of the trailer if you can remove it.

I like the register it first, add a removable cage later idea. Cheers Doc

you're kidding?

in QLD, the rules all change once you go above 750kg or single axle.

you need a roadworthy and rego goes up a lot
