Hi fella's,
Im curious as to who is allowed to restamp the block after machining, since most of it goes away when the blocks decked, whats the deal? If you had a rare block, im guessing a police issued number would not be desirable. Ive always wondered... Thanks. |

Im in the process of doing this as I have a new motor.
The process goes like this: 1. Get engine build, drop in car and take to vicroads with a letter from the engine builder saying its not been tampered with / stolen. 2. Vicroads inspects it and issue you with a VP number (vic police) 3. It is then up to you to get the engine block stamped. They recommend using a mechanic. Sounds dodgy but that is thier process. I wanted to get the engine stamped at the engine shop to make it easier but they wouldnt give me a number until it was in the car because 'you might not put that engine into that car' haha. |

this is where the issue lies, if you were lucky enough to own a jp block 6 cyl. the vp number makes it worthless..
Im sure your everyday block stamps are different to the gmh ones too, is this correct? Id hate to restamp a block with the same number and be pinged for "tampering" even though nothing has been changed. Sounds like a fair amount of effort just to register something you already own. So your saying legally theres no way to retain the original engine id number once its machined "off" |

The 6 cylinder JP block engine numbers aren't anywhere near the deck, so no issue there. Chevs are renowned for losing their engine number when decked. As as previously stated, vic roads will issue a new one if you can prove the engine number was machined off legit. When I took my HG to vic roads, they saw the machine marks and were happy with that. Angle grinder marks would raise suspicion, and you will most likely find yourself having to explain yourself to police.

cheers all, btw The jp thing was just something that popped in my head at the time.
I must get around to doing something with mine, engine number pretty much gone after a rebuild, I just dont want to go to the trouble of xrays etc (if theyre still done) It was my block, last registered to me and I have the old cars rego label so its probably not a huge hassle then. (obvious other "defectables" aside) |
