Default id tags/ rebodied cars/ cut and shut

Hi Doc, LX.

With respect to vehicle id tags (early girl) If I owned the original car and stripped it due to rust, can I transplant all the parts, id tags etc to another shell and reregister as the original car? There are no insurance claims, unroadworthy clearance issues or third parties involved. The vehicle was last registered by me, and was cancelled by me when the shell was stripped.

I know it looks like a "rebirth" but how can I rebirth something I already own? Whats the difference between cutting the car in two right in front of the windscreen and welding a good back half on to repair rust, and transferring Id tags to a rust free shell?

Since replacement body shells were available ex holden (and still are I believe for the later stuff) is the body considered a spare part for replacement?

The original shell is long gone (probably to china) so where does the legality come into it?

Ive done a little research but most applies to to tags purchased and then fitted, since ownership doesnt change in my case, what does the law say?

Cheers

You'll find these days that a replacement body already has a VIN. You can't transfer any ID from one car to another. I understand where you're coming from but it's a NO.

You can register a vehicle without tags but it's a hassle. It has to be checked and re-checked and engine numbers and chassis numbers x-rayed but can be done.

It's just like your old pushbike when you were a kid. Changed everything except the original seat post. Was it the same bike?

You can possibly get onto the OMVTS (organised motor vehicle theft squad) and ask them. They are the ones that do this sort of thing. 9247 6666 is the switchboard and ask for them. I'm on leave at the moment so want to leave it at work.

Cheers doc, its more to settle an argument than any serious consideration.

i should add the gentlemen selling the car in question say it is very common on the older cars even more so if they where gt gtr monaros etc people used to sell the tags and says that if the car is not stolen the dot will issue new vin and tags?
