G'day I am just wondering about the legality of having any thing sticking out of the bonnet. I want have a bug catcher just poking out maybe 2-3 inches. I have seen a few cars with them and they look tough as. Any knowledge much appreciated.
Cheers. |

one rule of thumb is cant be any hugher than the top part of your windscreen wipers... but i think thats crap. i wanted to put an air cleaner throough my bonnet but ill be cutting the cross bar which is then illegal unnless supports are made.

Yes, it is illegal to have protruding aircleaner, supercharge etc. You can have a bulge, scoop etc. so long as it has smooth edges and is a maximum of a certain height. I don't have the figures here, so I can't tell you off the top of my head how to determine what is legal. I'll see if I can find my book that contains data on the subject and get back to you.

Got me stuffed how some mange to get away with it because ya not allowed to have any part of your motor protruding from the car,
No allowed to have anything that is harder or stiffer then the bonnet that was originally on there. Fibreglass scops can’t obstruct vision and can’t be high enough to have a baseball go underneath the bottom lip. Exterior gages must not pose a safety risk to flying pedestrians and must not be obstructed vision or be reflective. Ive always wanted a big bug catcher like mad max and ive seen a few as well but its defect city if any of the blue lights decide they need some revenue and u need some exercise. All for pedestrian safety If ya ask me the best thing to stop pedestrians from being hit is driving a car that looks like mad max trust me on that one. Diving a colt around I have ppl walk start in front of the car everyday of the week don’t even think twice about it and ya blow the horn beep beep and they LOL at ya,, Replace the colt with a worked V8 that’s sitting there going vroomp – vroomp - vroomp with a big ass lumpy cam and the whole car shaking people refuse to walk in front of it even when ya waving at them saying your right go mate go,, and there standing at the crossing shacking there head saying NO NO its fine you go 1st . + a big set of train horns under the bonnet comes in handy for when dosy old cows in Mercedes Benz and BMW decide that there excluded from giving way because they have a Merc

You can't have anything sharp or moving poking through the bonnet.
http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/pdfs/...bulletin_3.pdf Page 18. And there is a very early thread in this section. doc
