The only thing you need for roadworthy is an effective handbrake. There are 4WD's out there that use a tailshaft handbrake and they're legal. As long as it's effective and works on the back wheels, I don't see a problem with it. Some of the earlier rally cars used a hydraulic handbrake and should be quite easy to set up. I think the reason car manufacturers use the cable is it's easier to adjust as well as probably cheaper for them to make.

Howdy!
My Rally expert friend says a hydraulic Handbrake is only a stop brake and not a Park Brake. Hence not allowed.

Did he mention why?

There's no mention of handbrakes in the Queensland Modification booklet, so all you'd have to work on is the ADRs.

Doc Legal mentioned the requirements to meet the ADRs

think its illegal because if the hydraulic brakes fail, you have the mechanical backup, however if they're all hydraulic your f#$%ed. i wish they were legal, would make rear brake upgrades alot cheaper.

I always of the understanding that they were illegal, but I'm yet to see any written evidence that says that.

I can see the point with hydraulic failures, but you must remember that the park brake is just that.
A PARK BRAKE. it's not an emergency brake (contrary to what the drifting population think) and isn't required to be able to stop the vehicle if the primary brake system fails. it only needs to HOLD the vehicle on a grade.

It wasn't that long ago that cars had a single brake reservior and you'd lose the lot if a wheel cylinder went. I had that happen to me 100k from home. very interesting drive home, considering home was closer than the nearest workshop and mobile phones hadn't been invented

Thats surprising but I stand corrected.

Wabbit had a good point regarding the single system master cylinders though.
