I just put this masssive looking air pump on my car with an air pod and was wondering if i need a permit to have it under my bonnet? I have done loads of research looking for information through dotars and DPI but could not find a legislation on superchargers. I got pulled over and yellow stickered for bald tyres and now have to go over the pits. Will i be ok?
To be honest why i got pulled over i over overtook an officer doing 150 in a 100 they were in a XR6 Turbo. The officer approached me and looked in the bonnet and said ahhh turbo hey. I corrected him and said nah supercharged and he said, i was wondering why i had trouble keeping up with you i thought you were a V8. I said bullshit. So the supercharger goes alright yet i lack a bit on the bottom end where as at the top end (after 3000rpm) she goes pretty hard as a stock all round. It is a project so a few little things like a tune and exhaust will get a lot better performance. Last edited by Steve Didge; 25-02-2008 at 09:34 PM. |

National code of practice for light vehicle construction and modification Section LA engine 1st February 2006. Modifications requiring certification under LS approval codes : Fitting equivalent engines (within 20% of original power and engine weight) : Fitting performance engines. : installing a supercharger or turbocharger : modifying engine components : A turbocharger or supercharger installation dose not require certification, ONLY if the installation is available as an option from the original vehicle manufacture. : Turbocharger or supercharger can be approved under code LA1 if the installation is available as an option from the original vehicle manufacture and NO MORE THEN 20% more power then the optional engine. : Turbocharger or supercharger can be approved under code LA2 if the installation is available as an option from the original vehicle manufacture is more then 20% more power then the option engine. : ALL OTHER TURBOCHARGER AND SUPERCHAGER INSTALLATIONS WILL REQUIE APPROVAL UNDER CODE LA3 And then it goes on to say that the car must met ADR Emissions External noise Brake System must be able to handle the increased HP exhort must be tested for noise And ground clearance and all the rest of the bull shit,,, So unless the maker of your car hands out superchargers as a part of a optional extra OR you have a engineering certificate and mode plate then when that goes over the pits your going to be flat bed trailing it home till you ether take it off or get it approved sorry for the bad new bro Gym_

Cheers for the info. I took the risk and went over the pits, all was good until he went under for inspection, shake of the wheel, lights, indicators, seatbealts etc. I proceeded to the question "did i pass" the answer "no" "what went wrong" "the ride is to low by 8mm" holding back my frustration i had i think and said "i will put a higher profile tyre" and he came back with another legislation. So i went to my closest auto shop and asked about some coil jacks which open the springs, yeah great but, there illegal. My question now is if i put these on will i run the risk of getting caught??? Or should i change the springs by #*#*##* 8mm. I mean it was under 100mm at the front end on the exhaust not the chassis. F**k there tight.

Wholly cracked spoilers batman !! ...
Crap your car must be low..lol.. you must be in a major city with some good roads,, i raised my car up about 200mm coz i was sick of taking the front spoiler off on the bloody lumps in the road that the semitrailers make from pushing the tar up into big lumps in the middle of the road and , drive ways and bloody speed humps and i still scrape over some of them.. but what i did was got nurathaine spacers the sit on top of the springs i scored them off a mate so i don’t know how much ther worth should be to much shorly and as far as i know their perfectly legal took about 2min to do the back springs and the fronts i changed from super low to sports. King spring sports were about 200 bucks i think for the pair and took about 45 min to drop the old ones out and put the new ones in,,, One question thou how did ya go with the supercharger ? did he tell you to get it taken off or did he pass it or give you a mod plate or somthing for it ? what’s the go with that,, ? Was this guy that put it over the pits a engineer or was he like from the RTA or something,, ?

So anyhow the bloke at the pits was an inspector engineer he was decent enough to hand out a permit without any cost for an aftermarket supercharger. Atleast now i am covered through insurance. I got under the car to check were it was too low and its on the first bend of the exhaust so i am going to cut the flange off about 20mm and rebolt it hopefully i pass. will keep in touch.
