Date set for Border car event

BY ANTHONY BUNN

THE man behind Shepparton’s giant SpringNats car festival is planning a similar event for Albury in February.
Les Adams said yesterday the Albury Autofest would be held on the weekend of February 24 and 25.
He plans to reveal the venue for the event at an official launch in the middle of next month.
“We’ve been looking at Albury for probably about eight years but the biggest problem has been a venue,” Mr Adams said.
“Every time someone told us about a venue we got up there and it wasn’t as good as we thought, but this time we can’t knock it back.”
Mr Adams said he had been negotiating with Albury council in relation to the venue and some incentives had been offered to assist with running the event.
He said the focus would be on performance cars from the 1920s through to today and the city’s automotive industry would be invited to participate along with vehicle owners.
Mr Adams believes the Albury Autofest has the potential to become bigger than the SpringNats, which are held on the last weekend in November and have run annually for 14 years.
“We average around the 50,000 a year (in Shepparton); the best year we had 63,000 but we average between 40,000 and 50,000,” he said.
“I could see Albury being bigger than that, being where it is, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne and with Wagga and Shepparton nearby.”
Mr Adams said that according to Shepparton council figures, the SpringNats pumped $14 million to $17 million into the Goulburn Valley capital.
“We hope probably over three to five years we would get to that kind of figure in Albury,” he said.
“I think we would pass that eventually with the population base.”
If the alcohol-free event is successful it might eventually involve a street parade, car display in QEII Square and fireworks.
Mr Adams hopes sporting and service clubs would help with staffing in return for donations.
Mr Adams will stage a car festival at Murray Bridge on the Australia Day weekend.
